I recently had a brief conversation about the history of Jazz with a local writer. I’m by no means an expert on the subject of Jazz or Jazz History, but I love history, and specifically New Orleans history. I suddenly found myself thinking I was missing a bigger part of the picture, and maybe I had no idea what I was talking about 😂 😆 He encouraged me to look into Kid Ory, and so I did just that, and he also suggested that I buy his book on Kid Ory, 😂 and so I bought it! I have really enjoyed reading it and I was inspired to begin reading more online about the subject of Creole’s, the German Coast and of course Jazz and Kid Ory. Ory was one of the great Jazz Pioneers and many considered him to be the best trombonist of the early Jazz era. He was an all around self taught musician, even making his own string instruments out of cigar boxes, buckets and fishing line. The kind of thing you do when you have little money and you have a true passion and calling for music. He grew up here on this plantation, the woodland plantation, but not to be confused with the well known b&b in Port Sulfur with the same name. This house is currently being restored and it looks like they are doing it right. Projects like this rare piece of history, should be tackled with a conscience. I am really looking forward to watching this renovation unfold on instagram.
