Happy heavenly birthday to Charles Mingus.
Charles Mingus – Pithecanthropus Erectus
Pithecanthropus Erectus is a studio album by jazz composer and bassist Charles Mingus. It was released in August 1956 through Atlantic Records
Personnel: Charles Mingus – bass Jackie McLean – alto saxophone J. R. Monterose – tenor saxophone Mal Waldron – piano Willie Jones – drums, tambourine
Reception.
The AllMusic review by Steve Huey awarded the album 5 stars and stated:” This was the first album where Mingus tailored his arrangements to the personalities of his musicians, teaching the pieces by ear instead of writing everything out. Perhaps that’s why Pithecanthropus Erectus resembles paintings in sound – full of sumptuous tone colors learned through Duke Ellington, but also rich in sonic details that only could have come from an adventurous modernist. And Mingus plays with the sort of raw passion that comes with the first flush of mastery. Still one of his greatest.”
The Penguin Guide to Jazz gave it a maximum four-star rating and included it in its “core collection” of essential recordings, describing it as “One of the truly great modern jazz albums”.

Today would have been #charlesmingus ‘s 100th birthday! A complex figure as a person, he was a brilliant composer and one of the most intriguing bass players ever. His distinctive, unhinged attack is simply unmatched. “Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.” - Charles Mingus. Mastery is understanding something so intricately you can express it in a single word, a single note, a dot... When we don’t understand fully we complicate to overcompensate. “Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason, mastery demands all of a person.” - Albert Einstein. Immerse yourself, devote yourself to mastery of your chosen talent - to the point where you can express yourself in a word, a note, a dot. “In order to master a field, you must love the subject and feel a profound connection to it. Your interest must transcend the field itself and border on the religious.” - Robert Greene. The devotion required to your expertise can be overwhelming. There’s no requirement for you to devote yourself, you don’t have to - you usually don’t have a choice, it’s in you. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you from full commitment. “A natural response when people feel overwhelmed is to retreat into various forms of passivity. If we don’t try too much in life, if we limit our circle of action, we can give ourselves the illusion of control. The less we attempt, the less chances of failure. If we can make it look like we are not really responsible for our fate, for what happens to us in life, then our apparent powerlessness is more palatable.” - Robert Greene. #simple #creativity #mastery #complicated #success #quotes #charlesmingus #mingusfingus #quoteoftheday #wordstoliveby #wordsofwisdom #words #art #music #artquotes #musicquotes https://www.instagram.com/p/CL3Ju-ujjKv/?igshid=19otrae28x4ax
