People often wonder how something as basic as a book can lower the crime rate in an area. Knowledge! By strengthening reading skills, frustration diminishes and students stay in school until graduation. With a diploma, opportunities are great: employment, higher education, tech colleges, universities, military service, etc. Without a diploma choices as minimal, and crime may become a means to survive. If criminal behavior has been in the family, crime can become the norm. Kids learn to read by 3rd grade and read to learn thereafter. If they struggle to read, they often give up and drop out. We give them books to practice and improve skills and give a reprieve from their situation. For kids of the incarcerated Father's Day can be lonely, painful and heartbreaking. We are reminded of the 5 year old boy who wanted a copy of a HARRY POTTER book...to give to his incarcerated dad on Father's Day. Jail rules prohibited him from doing so. The boy was given the book anyway and promised he'd give it to his dad upon release. We may never know the outcome but we'll never forget the smile on his sweet face knowing he could one day celebrate Father's Day with his dad. #KidsOfTheIncarcerated #fathersday #HarryPotter
