Back in 2012, we were involved with a local organization called Kids on a Mission… and that year, as every year, its children, youth, and adults set out to provide for local families in need. I tagged along to document their efforts and, hopefully, capture a little of what’s special when children make up their minds to make the world a better place... for everyone.
Afterward, I asked Linzy for help adding a little something extra to the video I was making about the experience. I’d already written lyrics for what I wanted to do but needed Linzy’s expertise to bring the words to life with melody, accompaniment, and an actual, you know, performance.
Here are the lyrics:
My little corner of the world is filled with grace, compassion, and love (My little corner of the world is filled with grace, compassion, and love) And I know it needs more (And I know it needs more) So I asked God about “What about pain, and cold, and thirst?” So I asked God about “What about hunger and loneliness?” And He said “Clothe them, feed them, shine My light in the darkness.” (“Clothe them, feed them, shine My light in the darkness.”) “And, by the way... love them as I have loved you.” My little corner of the world is filled with grace, compassion, and love.
The video turned out like so:
The song starts at about 4:02 after I ask some of the kids what they were doing and why.
It’s a sweet memory to indulge on a Thanksgiving Day built around family, friends, and a massive parade in New York City.
There’s warmth baked into the day that, we’re reminded over and over again, doesn’t exist for everyone. There’s warmth baked into the day that doesn’t characterize all our lives.
So.
One of the little things for which we’re thankful today is all the kids—here, there, and everywhere—who make up their minds and actually set out to change the world in small ways.
Because those small ways turn out to be a very big deal in the lives these kids touch with their service and compassion.
