Vocabulary Times: The Ugly

I recently gave a vocabulary assessment to the students. On the assessment, students chose five of the ten words to just write the definition. Then they used the remaining five words to write their paragraph. I decided to do a three part series with these paragraphs. We’ll call these ‘The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly’.

The Words:

Poignant - moving; emotional; touching Precipitous - Very steep; marked with very steep cliffs Reciprocate - To give and take mutually; interchange Gravitas – An air of seriousness that commands respect Timorous – Not confident, fearful Preeminent – most excellent; top; finest; greatest Rancor – resentment; bitterness; animosity Redemption – salvation; deliverance; rescue Indelible – unable to removed or erased. Sedentary – Characterized by sitting or being inactive

Part III: The Ugly These are the students who had no clue. They most let me know that they had no clue. No, I did not have pity on them. I’m that teacher.

Some people are poignant. Some are preeminent. Some are even precipitous. Most people need redemption. (It’s almost poetic.)

(The next two studied together before the test. I think the studying went really well.) I don’t know what the word preeminent means. I mean I just finished studying the vocabulary words, but I don’t know what it means. I kinda have an idea was gravitas but not 100% sure. (Another student’s name) the girl I studied with knows what rancor means, but I can’t ask her. I think the work precipitous means or has something to do with rain. I have no clue or even a guess of what reciprocate means.

I don’t know what poignant means so I will have to study them. If I don’t study me teacher will be very preeminent. My teacher also sings a song called Timbor, which sounds a lot like timorous! When I told my teacher I wanted to see Gravity, she thought I said gravitas! Silly teacher! Well bye, I am gonna go rancor, or whatever that word is. *Sorry (my name) I don’t know what any of these words mean.

This is my indelible paragraph. I’m supposed to use my timorous voacb words. Poignant is one of my vocab words. This paragraph is very preeminent. I also had reciprocat as a vocab word. (I’m really glad that the kid gave me a rundown of the vocabulary words.)

Part II: The Bad These students have an idea what the words mean, but don’t exactly know how to use all of them. Also, some struggle with keeping a story line going.

One day I went for a stroll in my wheelchair. My friend pushed me while I sit there sedentary. My friend started get rancor. So he pushed up a precipitous hill a pushed me down it. Then when I got home I reciporcated from my mom and my other friend Brian. The rest of the day was preeminent. (How does one push up a hill?)

Julie wanted to sedentarily have her food. She waited for about an hour so she decided to be rancor about it. After she finally got her food, She was gravitas when she went home she decided to never go to that timorous place again. (Julie sounds like a typically teenage girl.)

There once was a world that was sedentary. Where all the close had indelible stanes. The world was also full of rancor. People where also tigorou of each other. Every where you look you saw precipitous mountains blocking the sun. (He tries hard.)

Bob was watching a timorous movie. And it was also a poignant movie. It had precipitous mountains in it. Bob was sedentary all day. But he thought he was preeminent.

My sister is so sedentary. When you disturb her. She turns all gravitas. I’m just trying to be precipitous. But she’s too rancor. I need some redemption. One preeminent. (It’s like the child was being rushed. You must come up with sentences now off the top of your head. Now!)

Her rancor was so annoying nobody was her friend. At church we talked about redemption. The girl was very sedentary after her dad died. The slide was very preeminent. She was very gravitas. (All I hear is ‘One of these is not like the others.’)

I have to write a rancor paper for school. It has to be about why hills are precipitous. It has to also be indelible too. It has to have redemption as well. This paper will be preeminent. (You may have too much confidence in this paper.)

One day I was feeling sort of a “redemption” so I ate. It made me feel better so I decided to go outside. But for some reason there was a woman with a conjoined fetus baby attached to her face. Freaked out, I grabbed my gun and tickled her with it. <- Yeah. I tickled her. She laughed so hard the fetus baby fell off her face into a puddle. The woman seemed the opposite of “timorous” very happy….The fetus baby looked very still and “sedentary” so I poked it with a stick and it didn’t move.. I was “poignant” and also confused. I looked up at the lady and awkwardly “reciprocated” her fetus baby to her face. (You may think this deserves to be with the ugly, but she knew what some of the words meant. This is definitely one of the weirdest paragraphs that I’ve ever read. We had a conversation about it. Apparently, she finds this to be very humorous. She couldn’t understand what was wrong with writing this for a school grade (or ever). This is what kids are like today.)

Part I: The Good I do have several students who write good, creative paragraphs. They still have a few grammar mistakes, but overall it is written well.

My brother pushed me down a precipitous hill, and my leg broke. I became sedentary. When I fell down the hill, an indelible stain was on my pants. My brother wanted redemption from what he had done. I thought his apology was very poignant, so I forgave him.

The girl was sedentary on the couch. She was very timorous, so why did she watch the scary movie? It was about a house on top of a precipitous hill. This house was haunted. Once she saw indelible blood stain, she was scared. She should have watched a poignant movie instead, like “The Fault in Our Stars”.

Every Saturday night my family and I have movie night. It’s like watching movies at a movie theater, but at home! My mom chose a movie that is scary and preeminent at the same time. Watching the movie made me feel timorous. The mood set in the movie was gravitas. There was one part that scared me so much. I dropped my Coke, and it left a indelible stain on the rug! When though the ending was poignant in a happy way, I’m never watching it again!

In my day I was a preeminent soccer player. One day a rancor fan came to my game. She shouted hateful things at me and I was timorous. That scar is indelible from that day forward. I never played. Instead I became sedentary and got fat.

Five boys were going to skydive off a precipitous mountain. One of them were too timorous to jump. He was so scared, he wept himself and had a yellow, indelible stain on his pants. The other boys were the most preeminent divers and laughed at how scared he was, and jumped off the cliff whooping and yelling. The next day though he got redemption by facing his fear and jumped off the cliff. (Those are some crazy tears. I've never seen tears that leave a yellow stain.)

When I woke up this morning I felt sedentary so I juts put a tshirt on and some sweatpants. At lunch I sat down next to my friends, which is (student’s names), the most gravitas and mean girl in school. So I had to reciprocate what was coming to me when she got here. When she came to sit down she was to mad that she spilt her grape juice on me. The stain was indelible. When I got to class I told my teacher what happened. I guess she thought it was very poignant explanation because she was crying.

I wanted to come up with a poignant gift for my cousin’s birthday because she’s my best friend. We do everything together, even reciprocate our clothes! I wanted the gift to be perfect, or preeminent. I wanted something indelible and unforgettable. I wasn’t going to be sedentary with this birthday, so I burnt three CD’s titled When You’re Happy, When You’re Sad, and When You Miss Old Memories. I also got personalized BFF phone cases with our names. I hope she likes it.

Last Bit of Poetry, I Promise

Poems from the students who turned in their work late. 

Limerick Cotton candy is so yum But really I prefer gum Chew it fast or slow Gum is here to stay where else would it go Unless  I swollow it nullify in my tum (Well, it will be in the next seven years.)

School I sit alone at a desk You ask why Im such a mess Motonous of this place Puts a frown on my face When school lets out Im filled with joy Like I just got a new toy when we went to the store we bought a dog but when we got home it chased a hog he was very notorious for chashing things we did find a soulition for it our family decided to build a fence out of log (It's amazing that they are able to build a whole fence out of one log, or it is the smallest fence ever. Also, I wonder if a soulition is a solution that comes from deep, deep down.)

Haiku the frog spoke to me "boom" he dropped down know he lie dead (I haven't spoken to this child since.)

Another Edition of Vocabulary Fun!

This is another vocabulary post. To assess my students’ knowledge of these words, they had to choose six of the ten words. After they chose the words, they had to write a cohesive paragraph using the words. I figured if they are able to write a complete paragraph with the words, they should know the definition of the words.

 The words:

Demoralize- To deprive of spirit, courage, discipline; to destroy the morals or beliefs of. Emphasize- To lay stress upon; to give attention to or focus on. Patronize - To behave in an offensive manner towards someone or something. Revolutionize- To bring great change to a job, field, etc.; to make tremendous advances. Scrutinize- To examine in detail with great, careful attention; to ridicule. Dreaminess- The state of being vague, dim, unclear. Listless- noun- Having or showing very little interest in someone or something. Loveless- Feeling no appreciation or self-worth; without affection. Loneliness- The feeling of being alone; to be without company. Playfulness- The state of being full of fun; joyful, excited.

The dog’s dreaminess was so strong its cuteness blinded me. Then all of a sudden a vampire jumps out and demoralizes the puppy. The vampire had no heart he was loveless. He tried to bite me but I emphasized and said I had to use the bathroom. When I got back out, where the vampire was, he took off his mask and it was the neighbor “Oh, his playfulness!” (I like how the vampire allowed her to go to the bathroom. What a considerate vampire, even if it was her neighbor. I hope the neighbor was a child her age. It would be weird if an adult was ‘trying to bite her’.)

I have a high level of playfulness. My teacher tries to demoralize me about it. He says that I suffer from extreme dreaminess. He moves me around a lot and I actually suffer from lonliness. He is quite a loveless individual. He tries to emphasize that I am stupid, but I am not. I’m going to revolutionize the world for troubled kids. (He must be taking about his math teacher.)

I can’t stand it when my family and friends patronize saying I can’t do something. I wish I could demoralize the entire thought of that act towards someone or something. Everytime time someone starts saying I can’t do this or that, I’m gonna a certain wat to emphasize my feelings who they say something like that. I am gonna act loveless and show no emotion towards them. They will eventually relize their loneliness and will come crawling back for forgiveness. Hopefully, this will revolutionize this act of hurt. Nobody deserves to be treat like this!

Being loveless leads to loneliness. People tend to emphasize the fact I’m very listless about it, honestly. I doze into dreaminess when someone brings it up I become very playful and get over it, because I’m twelve.

Being lonely is like being loveless. The old man has felt that way ever since his wife died. His family was listless because he was so lonely. He didn’t even know why he was so mean and demoralizing to them. His family tried to think and scrutinize the problem strategically to try to make him not feel so lonely, but it never worked. (Now I am sad.)

I took a walk to clear my head. when I was walking I stoped by the orphanage. The kids there looked loveless, like the were bored to death. I was dreaminess of what to do, so I went home and got some money. When I was comeing back I happen to see a hobo. I gave him some money and went on my way. I emphasized that owner knows I am bying a child. I went to the child I wanted. It looked so alone and it gave me a feeling of loneliness. So I bought him. To keep you revolutionize of what is happening now, the child and I are happy and the child is very playful. I think he goes out side everyday to get out his playfulness. (I like how she went to the child that she wanted, and it looked so alone. I guess she pictures the orphanage being like a dog pound. You walked through and pick which child you want.)

Nobody in town was signing up to revlutionize the ban of cell phones in public places. What kind of loveless person would do something like that? This would patronize the whole town. I began to emphasize what would happen. Not being able to talk to people in public would give the vibe of loneliness. I realized that my thought had went to dreaminess thoughts. No way that this will happen!! (It’s the end of the world.)

The world is revolutionizing. People are less loveless and nicer. It seems now everyone loneliness doesn’t bring other people down. Nobody patronizes anyone anymore. Not even the cops scrutinize the bad people when they get aressted. It seams af is i’m in a dreaminess daze! (No one patronizes anyone? Rude awakening coming ahead for this child.)

One day, a man was feeling lovelss. He couldn’t find the right person. His loneliness ate him alive. He wanted to emphasize on one girl instead of 20. When he found that one special person she would revolutionize his life. One day, he went out and found the person he was meant to be with. She always had a lot of playfulness. The dreaminess he used to have never came back after he found the right person.

There once was a Little boy who’s playfulness was Large! His Loveless mother told him to go strate to bed. All night the boy cryed, but he all ways emphasized his crys. Finaly the boy went to sleep and had a dreaminess night. When he woke up, the boy thought he would revolutionize his cry, so he began to wail! His voice demoralized everyone! The Little boys mother was so upset, she sent the little boy strait to bed! (I thought the mother had already sent him to bed. Maybe there’s a different between strate to bed and strait to bed. I don’t know.)

I was in a playfulness place. Then I got bored of loneliness. I was loveless for this place. I woke up and realized I was dreaminess. (This child lives in a state of dreaminess.)

One day I was walking in the park and I saw a patronized dog! He was all over the place! He was mad, sad, and maybe a little bit happy. I don’t speak dog. Then I found out it was the neighbor’s dog. A couple of days ago he lost his best friend. He was very loveless. “A playfulness dog never has worries,” said the vet when I took him. The poor dog was sitting having a little fun watching the other dogs play with each other. Then I found out that he listless lover dog. The dreaminess of his eyes were a memory to be held. A couple of days later his lady friend came back. He was no longer considered the “loneliness” dog! The End

I have to use six words in a paragraph. I chose Loveless, Listless, Loneliness, Demoralize, playfulness, dreaminess for my six words. Then when I get done I have to turn it in to the teacher. In this paragraph there has to be 5-6 sentences, and I have 4 now. Now I have 5 setences I’m about to have six. I’m finish writing all of this: six vocab words, 5-6 sentences, and has to be cohesive. (I am not sure if this child was trying to pull a fast one or actually thought this would work………..it didn’t.)

You Tell 'Em Sister

Another response to property stolen:

If somebody tried to steal my friends property I would say that isn’t yours give it back and if they didn’t I would tell a grownup and try to get it back by tacking it back without them finding out. If they did find out I would say you need to stop and don’t steal it is bad and mean.

(This is my new strategy when I catch a thief.)
