going off of this post, hc that the moment tlp!claude has athy killed is so intense that it actually triggers some memories of diana to return. then comes his realisation that hey wait, diana's death was in vain all because of me, and i really just murdered the last and only symbol of herself she left behind. and it's so much for his mind to handle that he starts seeing her in everything. like him and jennette are having tea, and -
"hm. i haven't visited athanasia in a while, tell her to come join us."
jennette nearly passes out.
or he'll randomly stroll into the most lavish bedroom in emerald palace, obviously made for the obelian heir, expecting to see her (and finding jennette instead). maybe he'll send her the key to a treasury or have a garden made for her on her birthday.
and each time this happens, it kills both jennette and kiel, but what can they do except go along with it? "i'm sorry, dad, but athy is resting right now, she hasn't been sleeping well recently so i don't want to disturb her to just join us for tea." or "how many times must i remind you, dad, my sister is visiting arlanta."
at some point he'll start hallucinating her too probably, like he's just working (just to be careful jennette, kiel and felix also go through every official document he's working on) and he'll randomly look up, smile, and start talking to no one at all. "did you have lunch properly? you've been getting thinner recently." / "how are your studies going? need any help?" / "your hair is as long and unruly as ever, i see - just like your mother's. but it's getting hotter, athanasia, perhaps you'd like to have it cut?" / "a proposal for the princess came from the calio heir. if he's idiotic enough to believe i would consider this then you don't suppose duke calio would actually thank me for getting rid of him, hm?"
jennette and kiel are the first ones to see the imperial family's portrait once it's done, but there's a very obvious problem: athy isn't in it. so kiel ends up repainting it himself, adding athy beside claude from memory bc he's a simp smart. claude has kiel draw more paintings of her, all of which are in his room with multiple layers of protection spells. and the situation just keeps getting worse, no sign of healing present.
never has claude de alger obelia's favorite child been the one before him.
in his mind, athanasia de alger obelia is unchanging, forever eighteen years old, on the cusp of immortality. by his side always and plaguing his thoughts in the most beautiful sense. she fills in his empty spaces, the silences, the memories that keep resurfacing, erasing them clean until it is all her. until she is all he sees, all he cares for, all he knows. keeps him from drowning in his own mind the way he was never able to do for her.
the irony is bitter - in the most obvious sense, the late princess is dead, the permanence of it unquestionable. in every other aspect however, also unquestionably, princess athanasia de alger obelia is the most alive person in the imperial palaces.
