KiHimu drabble because pretty boys and procrastination apparently become ~300 words of Himuro angst
He gives an easy smile despite his mild shock as the ball flies right through his block. Surely, he'd believed he was used to this feeling by now; by the knowledge that there was a level he would never reach, that these people around him took for granted and worked beyond so easily.
Still, as Kise Ryouta tilts his head, golden hair falling across his face, and smiles back at him, he can't help but feel out of breath, the way he so effortlessly mimics the things Tatsuya has worked so hard and so long to create.
"Did I do it right?" he asks, and Tatsuya wants to punch him because Kise knows, he knows very well that he did, that he did it perfectly, if not better than Tatsuya himself, but instead he just smiles, and tries to swallow down the bitterness.
Kise is beautiful; his talent makes his movements smooth and effortless despite that by all accounts Kise has only been playing for perhaps three years, tops. He moves the way Tatsuya has spent a lifetime learning how to, and he does it with an intensity that Tatsuya will never have.
It burns, watching Kise move like Taiga, watching him move like Atsushi, watching him mimic the prodigies Tatsuya has never seen up close, the way it's all so easy for him. Tatsuya hates him sometimes, but it's hard to hold onto - cruel words bounce off him; trying to hit him never works, because Kise doesn't pull his punches either, and has a lifetime of alleyway fights with disgruntled boys behind him; and ignoring him is impossible - so instead he savours the kisses Kise gives him while he's still amusing enough for Kise to stick around.
It all really began because Kise was a narcissist. "I couldn't imagine the sort of withdrawal symptoms you all would go through," he brags when they're all gathered for a reunion dinner of sorts, at Akashi's request. "After all, I am the most beautiful thing you all have seen." He means it jokingly, because he is an easygoing character who is deliberately childish, so he knows they won't take it seriously that he sort of believes it himself. He tosses his hair a little and Kuroko hones in to steal his tuna.
None of the others are quite so naive enough to fall bait to his taunts, but Murasakibara surfaces from his consumption to say, "Eh, I would argue that Muro-chin is prettier than you."
"Bring him to me," Kise commands.
"Things really are different when you're a model," Himuro says in awe after Murasakibara is bribed to bring his upperclassman to Kise after several false promises of snacks. After they arrive and Kise is empty handed, Murasakibara slinks off to find a vending machine whilst muttering threats of telling Akashi of Kise's duplicity. But Kise is too busy sizing up his opponent.
"I am more classically good-looking than you," Kise announces before introducing himself.
Himuro blinks and looks up at him - it is a trick of perspective, they only have a few inches on each other, but Himuro angles his chin low and peers up - through thick eyelashes. "Is that so?"
Kise swallows. Is this what they mean by adult sophistication? "Yes."
"Well, I'll have you know, sweet little Kise-kun, that I too am a narcissist in that I like to surround myself with pretty things. And I see you as a very pretty thing."
"Do you?" Kise asks, momentarily swept up in the honeyed praise.
"I do," Himuro purrs, and he says it again as he is thrusting into Kise at the hotel he's staying in in Tokyo. "I find you very pretty right now."
