“H-Hey!” One of the few downsides of his height, paired with his dedication to a sharp wardrobe, was that people had a tendency to yank on his tie. Like a dog’s leash. Kent shoved that comparison to the far recesses of his mind.

“Fumiko,” he grunted. “I’d appreciate it if you didn’t grab me like this... Especially by the tie. You could, erm... Tear the fabric...”

1) When Lupin found out Zenigata had a kid, he was pretty shocked! Sure, Pops struck him as a fatherly guy, but he never imagined him actually having a child. Lupin made sure to sneak about & learn what he could about her for learning’s sake.

2) Lupin would often disguise himself as Zenigata to check Toshiko out of school early for some solid Uncle Lupin fun time. He fooled her teachers but he never fooled her. Considering her dad was picking her up in a bright yellow fiat it wasn’t that much of a stretch. Lupin would take her to get something to eat, then either the park or the aquarium. He said it was all to learn information about Zenigata they could use later to their advantage, but deep down he liked talking to the little girl. 

3) Lupin stops his random Toshiko visits after his thieving gets more serious and Zenigata has his divorce. He doesn’t really seem it appropriate at the time, and he 100% meant to visit her again, but he got so busy and Zenigata got so persistent that Toshiko really slipped from Lupin’s mind for a time. One second she was a little kid, then she was a grown adult. 

4) The more hostile Toshiko is with him, Lupin takes that energy and gives it back in pure annoyance. With how much he teases and annoys her father, Lupin can crank that dial up to 11 for Toshiko. Even then, Lupin would probably just stick his fingers in his ears and go “LALALALALA!!” until Toshiko got too frustrated to continue.

He’s not mad, surprisingly-- maybe that would come later, but he isn’t right now. Right now he’s just confused, incredibly so. Fumiko was too flustered to give him any real information, not that he blamed her. It just didn’t add up: she wasn’t the type, not by any stretch; there must have been a mistake. Friggin townie cops, grasping at straws just so they have something to do. They have no idea the hell he’s gonna--

Okay, he’s mad now. But he’s gotta save it, because right now he’s gotta make sure his daughter is alright.

“Toshi, I--” He’s talked to a lot of perps, but nothing like this. “...What the heck happened here, hon?”

The inspector blinks in confusion, not sure why Toshiko was reacting like this. “Toshiko, it’s...quite alright. I think they’re pretty innocent, and it’s not like I’m going to start dating anyone because of these letters.”

“A team?” Some tender thing deep in Kent’s shriveled little heart was touched with those words. Had he enough sense to recognize it, he’d call the feeling paternal. But it was utterly alien, and like most new emotions tended to make him, lit him up like a red Christmas light.

Kent cast his gaze to his toes and shuffled them. “That’s a nice sentiment,” he murmured after a while. “A nice sentiment indeed. But it amounts to peanuts unless--” he raised a solitary index finger to wave around “--unless you do your part to mend this whole... Situation. I can only do so much on my own.”

“O-Oh!” A trill of laughter rises out of Kent. He has to turn his attention skyward to save himself any further embarrassment. “Oh, well-- That’s very nice of you, Ms. Yokoyama. Come to think of it, uh... I don’t think anyone’s said that about my nose before.”

Something like a pit forms in his stomach as his daughter yells out. Fine, he can see where she’s coming from. But still, the fact that she could see right through him, see exactly why he decided to devote his life to his work, didn’t make the slight buzz of his headache go away. As people looked to see what was going on, the Inspector tipped his hat down slightly as he struggled to find the right words.

“Toshiko, you know I still love you and your mother. And I always will. But sometimes, people like me have to...leave for something that they can’t bear to make their family stress over. This work is for me, and for me alone.”

Toshiko runs into her father's office, places a gift onto his desk and runs out. Inside is a coffee mug with the title "World's Okayest Dad" on the front.

⚖️ 𝙰𝙷, 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙾𝙻' "𝙳𝙸𝚂𝙰𝙿𝙿𝙴𝙰𝚁𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝚃𝙾𝚂𝙷𝙸𝙺𝙾" 𝙰𝙲𝚃… Zenigata remembers it well, back when he'd be stuck wrangling her before nearly every drive to preschool. He smiles after the girl, a sudden twinge in his chest pulling at one heartstring too many.

As for the mug... Well, he supposes it's as fair enough a label as any, especially when he's been called 𝚆𝙾𝚁𝚂𝙴.
