Rumblings in the underground went on about some kind of dog beast, presumably a yokai - maybe one from the far north. But what would it be doing in the city? Creatures of the countryside rarely ventured into the more busy and crowded urban environments.
But that was exactly where Syde liked to be. Sure, he had had his start in the English countryside and still held a certain fondness for the moors, woods, and wilderness - still owned a home there, in fact - but he spent the bulk of his time in big cities now. They were the best places to meet people.
Especially when he was from out of town. He figured the easiest way to stir up to trouble was to start word of a mystery monster. Surely someone interesting would come looking for him sooner or later. Human or yokai didn’t make much difference to him, he would have fun whether it was treating teenagers to a little scare or having some altercation with a territorial vampire coven. Did Japan have those? He knew they were fairly prevalent in China at least...
In the meantime, he had picked out this area because the nearby bars and restaurants were good. Syde didn’t have much in the way of local currency yet, so just as well for him to help himself to their leftovers. Currently he had his canine visage stuffed into a bag of trash in the back alley of a bar. The plastic was ripped open, debris littered the alley where he had made a right mess digging around for the food he could detect inside.
But his ears perked, his head lifted from his prize when he felt a distinctive presence drawing closer. He stood still, listening for footsteps from around the corner; if there were none, that was all the more suspicious.
