Kilbert Hennes - Atelier Annie: Alchemist of Sera Island

Moving into characters that I actually like, let's talk about Kilbert. Or as I prefer to call him, KILLbert, because he lays down some sick burns throughout this game. Quite a few characters do, actually, but his are legendary.

How do you begin to describe this man to someone who has never experienced the game? You know that one person in your life that just says things and you think to yourself, “Oh yeah, just another (insert name)-ism that will go down in our friendship history?” That’s KILLbert.

I think my favorite part was that there was just one day I was playing where I got back to back most of his best cutscenes, my personal favorite being “The Fishing Line” with Gillian. It just gets me, you know? I think that conversation was the moment where I realized I wanted to write a story in which characters had inane banter and could just hang out in a couple of scenes, leading to the creation of one of my novels.

The resolution to his character arc was one of the most satisfying too. I don’t want to give it away, but the final two scenes for it were so “d’aww” worthy and some of Kilbert’s thoughts about his present self really stuck with me. In a way, I ended up adopting some goofier traits to my personality (not that I wasn’t goofy in the first place but oh well)

Overall: KILLbert is totally the Master of Sick Burns and a gift from the JRPG Gods. 10/10 recommended best buddy.
