Ancardia's Unusual Animals--The Kirin, or Kilin, or Qilin
Classification: Dragon (kirin)
Habitat: Open grasslands, particularly in equatorial zones like the Buldar region and the Silver Coastlands.
The Kirin (which is spelled Qilin in Sudavaan and Zanalva, and Kilin in the Doravn Aynaul dialect) is a close cousin of the true dragons, especially closely related to the Water Dragon species. It is also the smallest of the draconic family, and the only one which is both terrestrial and lacks natural flight. Similar to its relations, the kirin is naturally potent in the magical department, able to charm itself into running at supernatural speeds, focus and direct lightning, light-rays, and various enchantments and hexes from its horns, and levitate and turn invisible for short periods of time. All of these powers result in a creature very difficult to track down and even more difficult to approach—making them nearly as cryptic and mysterious as the true dragons.
Adult kirin are about the size of a small horse or a larger pony, and are lightly-built herbivores which prefer tree foliage and fruit to coarser plants and grasses. While usually docile, when pursued, stalked, or directly targeted kirin put up a fierce fight and are known to have slain at least four Aynaul monster-hunters of significant fame when they were hired to track and kill a kirin for some alchemist nobles’ purposes. The few creatures known to have successfully predated on kirin usually target the juveniles, and include rukh, griffon, Antediluvian dire-drakes, and large crocodiles. Kirin are known to roam widely in territories that can be over 100 square miles, almost always overlapping with two or three other kirins’ territories. Once every four years a female kirin becomes able to bear young, and mates with the nearest unrelated male. In the event there are no female kirin in ranges overlapping any of the local male kirins’ territories, the most senior of the males will undergo significant hormonal changes and become female in a span of a few weeks, and mate with a different male himself. Like ungulates, newborn kirin begin to stand, walk, and run within minutes of being born, but unlike ungulates, kirin embryos develop at first in internally-reserved eggs, with the shells of these eggs disintegrating shortly before the time of birth. Kirin grow to full size quickly, within a few years, but do not fully develop the ability to bear or sire young until about 20 years of age. As with true dragons, kirin live long lives, usually exceeding 200 years, sometimes reaching 300 years if they are lucky.

The Kingdom of Sashafya was filled to overflowing with kindness. It seeped through the walls of houses, it sprang up underfoot on the street. Kindness poured through every cracked window; it welled and spilled over in the smiles of her people, in their words, in their gentle hands and eagerness to help one another and any they came across.
Yes, anyone. Even the mount of the great Queen Jiayi, hailing from a kingdom beyond Sashafya’s walls. He was a Qilin, a single, antler-esque horn protruding through his forehead, a scaly neck and underbelly, with features that seemed a cross between some sturdily-built horse, a dragon, and a great deer. Only his eyes, deep and large and dark blue, lacked the fierceness of his appearance. They were wide eyes, confused eyes, tired eyes from a restless night of little sleep.
He had no name, so the servant girls who flocked about him had other titles thought up in a matter of seconds.
“Hello, Qilin,” one crooned. Another took a few flowers and set to weaving them into his long, white mane.
“Qil, you are a majestic creature!”
“You’re beautiful!”
“King Nik is sure to love you!”
“You’re even prettier than Queen Jiayi! Don’t tell her, though!”
The Qilin’s ears swiveled to and fro as he attempted to catch every compliment. He had sprawled himself in the pasture that surrounded the palace; a place for the royal horses to graze and wander leisurely when they weren’t being used to transport or battle. A girl clambered onto his back, and he shifted position so she could comfortably reach his mane.
How long had he wanted to set foot in this palace! Traverse its roads and pathways, meet its people, speak to King Nikolaj himself!
Of course, he had imagined it a bit differently from the present moment. He had imagined himself as he was, walking on two legs, dressed in his royal robes. Instead, he came on four hooves, his only garment being the covering of fur and scales that hid his human complexion behind the face of a creature.
Ah...curses.
Cursed by an evil queen who happened to be your wife.
Maybe King Nikolaj had met an odder monarch, he wondered with a touch of a smile. Maybe-..
..ah..ah...but the scratching behind his ear was wonderful! He shivered, tilting his great head so the girls could reach it better with their little hands.
A shadow threw itself over the merry scene, and the girls scrambled back as Queen Jiayi herself appeared before them.
“It is time,” she announced, sweeping up a handful of her robes and glancing toward the creature.
Her King. Her husband, once. King Svarin. Now a creature that walked on all fours and ate grass like a horse.
“It’s time to meet King Nikolaj.”
His ear twitched, and he rolled over, unfolding his legs and gently maneuvering himself to stand, balancing the added weight of his sturdy form. The girls groaned in protest, scrambling aside and offering the Qilin a few more head pats.
Svarin followed after Jiayi, throwing a look over his shoulder at the girls. Perhaps their king was just as kind. And if they could be kind to a four-legged beast such as he, then how much more so would they be kind to his kingdom and people, should an alliance be made?
Of all the horrible things his wife had done, perhaps this alliance would not be one of them.
