you have always been the only one to treat him with kindness. it's only fair that such affections be met in return with obsession.
there was not a lot of good that could be said about the sturniolo household in their youth. three near-identical brothers enter the first summer of their adult lives after high school graduation, and only one remains by the next summer.
chris sturniolo was treated like a wild animal once returning from wherever him and his two brothers' had disappeared to. gawked at, given a wide berth as if he'd bite or maim if approached too quickly. prey knows innately when a predator is near, and everyone who lived in your bustling beachside town knew that he was not safe, whether it was a conscious thought or not.
you are everything he resents. you are gentle and sweet, bubbly and optimistic ─ dealt a hand that rewarded your curiosity and intelligence rather than punished you for it.
but as much as he tries to hate you, he's never been capable of hurting you. it is impossible to not obsess over the enigma of his routines and habits. the detour from the structure he knows best turns the calculated efforts and guidelines he has for himself into ticking bombs, waiting to burst.
he wants to be good for you, in a way. isn't that enough? but all of his efforts are weak and feeble, and his patience is a wavering thin line, and it is so much easier to convince himself to kill you than it is to love you.

Chris comes up behind Ada silently like a shadow, almost cheerful in tone he greets her, "Hello my dear! I have quite the gift for you."

Ada turned around, eyebrow raised in anticipation. She already had an idea as to what the gift could be, based off their last conversation with each other. But who knows, this Chris might show up with even more surprises.
“Oh? What is it? Don’t keep me waiting, the suspense is killing me.”
