With this album, I sought to separate myself from the musician I used to be. It isn’t that I’m ashamed of that part of myself. I actually really love playing acoustically. It’s just that I’ve grown and transitioned into something that’s more exciting and much more “myself”, if that makes sense. That’s also part of the reason I chose to begin releasing music under a moniker; it gives me a sense of separation from the quieter, tamer stuff I was playing before.

“I start with songs, and then I build around them with instrumentation as I see fit. If I don’t perceive a need for anything beyond the bare bones skeleton of the song, I’m not going to add onto it. I don’t like clutter.”

“If the message is being communicated effectively with minimal instrumentation, why add more? I’d rather people just listen to what I’m saying and to hear my voice. I labor over my lyrics far too much to have them hidden under layers of unnecessary sound.”

“My aim was to keep [Torres] as minimal as possible from start to finish. Just bare bones. I knew that I didn’t want to put any instrument on any song if it wasn’t absolutely crucial to it. That being said, we experimented within those boundaries.”

Interviewer: What do the next 12 months have in store for Torres?

Mackenzie Scott: I plan to tour and write as much as possible, and hopefully I’ll get bit of downtime as well. But I don’t enjoy too much downtime; I like to stay busy. It keeps me from getting buried in my head too much.

“This is the first time I went under the name Torres. I just took it on as my own.”

Interviewer: How have the songs translated live?

Mackenzie Scott: They’ve become more and more intense as I’ve played live shows with a band. The dynamics have become much more emphasized and the sounds have gotten grungy and raw. I’m really enjoying myself. The live show aspect has become a huge release for me.

“Now that I’ve put the record out into the world, I’ve had more time to focus on the live show, and to let the songs become what they want to be. It turns out they want to be a little more vicious than I initially thought. Or maybe I just want to be a little more vicious than I initially thought.”

“Even when I was recording this album, I held myself back because I was afraid of letting myself go nuts and allowing people to see me unhinged. I was embarrassed. Being on the road this year has completely dissolved that self-imposed ball-and-chain.”
