First Impression:
Killers (2014)
Killers is the latest work of the duo Mo Brothers who are famous for their slasher film Rumah Dara. The film remarks another step in Indonesia movie industry as it is also a joint production between Guerilla Merah Films and Japanese studio NIkkatsu.
The plot story, as quoted from Wikipedia:
Nomura Shuhei is a young, charismatic, and charming Japanese executive based in Tokyo who has a dark side nobody knows. He kills people and has been recording the action in videos. Nomura uploads videos of his killing on the Internet in order to be seen by everyone.
On the other side of the earth is Bayu Aditya, an ambitious Jakarta-based journalist. His obsession to uncover a story of a politician named Dharma makes his marriage and career fall apart
...and so begins the seemingly unrelated lives of Nomura and Bayu who turned out share the same type of hunger, a violent one.
I watched this film looking for some bloody gore actions, something that made me love Rumah Dara, and left feeling...depressed. Sure the film is filled with couples of gut wrenching scenes, but the underlying tone feels more like a social commentary to me. A depressing one (and this coming from someone who actually loves "dark" films).
The theme revolves around one of our basic instinct: the hunger of violence. It was portrayed differently between the characters, motivation and all, as in Nomura has the violence hunger that was more like a serial killer while Bayu was more driven to social injustice and revenge. But in the end, it went down toward the same thing, them being killers. And honestly it saddens me knowing that despite the different level of violence we possessed, we aren't so different from Bayu and Nomura. I mean, come on, who hasn't feel like choking someone annoying or cursing someone to death? Perhaps it only takes so much to trigger that.
The film also depicts what i can only describe as times when our curiosity and act of sharing gone wrong, ethically and morally. It's pretty much like what happened when there is an accident and most usually there will also be a flock of watchers nearby. And soon after comes the mentions about it in twitter. Isn't it similar to what's in the film? We see this kid capturing the video when someone is literally dying. Heck, i wouldn't even be surprised if the website to which Nomura and Bayu uploads their killing videos really exist. Just because we love to share something, be the first, and feel superior.
Killers is a witty and stylish film as evident by its excellent cinematography and scoring. Remember the fighting in taxi with Bayu scene? That got me squealing especially in the last frame just because it was so awesome. The scene where Nomura soaking in blood while the music was playing in the nightclub was also shot beautifully, as in i got the portrayal of Nomura who is a narcissistic. And the scoring, i give the team a big applause just because it was eerie (in a good way) which befits the overall theme.
All in all, even with all the flaws (partly because of the whole family drama with Bayu and a somewhat gimmicky CGI attempt bullet face), the film is still an epic somber journey.
