South Carolina State Closing??
Earlier this week there was an uproar of conversations about our historical South Carolina State University. The conversations were not too good for the people enrolled or the staff. The State Government has voted on a proposal to shut down the school for at least a year to recover from it's financial state.
The Orangeburg school has a $10 million deficit owed to food and maintenance vendors. Its enrollment also has dropped by more than a third since 2007, and just 14 percent of its students graduate within four years.
“We are looking at a bankrupt institution,” said state Rep. Jim Merrill, the Berkeley Republican who heads the panel that recommended suspending operations at S.C. State. “No one takes any pleasure in recommending this.”
We will provide more information as time passes.
2nd and 3rd Paragraphs provided by Andrew Shain
I'm worried.
It's going to happen. I am sure of it. I am sure Nikki Haley & republicans will continue thr path to shut down SC State. The thing is, Bob Jones has had similar issues...guess what? No one discusses shutting them down for a year. & for the government to pretend it is blameless in this is ridiculous. They know why the school is in this situation. They know who they unleashed on us. They pretended not to see or hear when formal complaints were made about the financial discrepancies & the blatant intimidation tactics. They did this for years. Years. This financial situation isn't sudden, it was in when I was in middle school. I'm about to be 33 years old. I watched them leech the life out of that school. I saw them "reshuffle" leaders from departments that were flourishing to lessen their impact & dismantle their work. They began to cheat the students, they demoralized & tore away faculty that loved being a part of SCSU & wanted us to. This has been a long political battle between the state & SC State. & they finally feel they have us where they want us. They are willing to sacrifice the well being of others to exact punishment: The students of SC State The faculty & staff whose livelihoods & families depend on State The businesses that benefit The majority black community that benefits As the only public, state-supported HBCU...SC State has never supported the school the way they have other schools. This act of ruining state from the inside out began after they saw State truly flourishing. They never wanted that. & they will always continue to try and poison from the inside out. They just don't care. Support & time & letting President Elzey do his work will fix this. Instead they will sabotage an HBCU. A year doesn't just mean a break. It means the end. No students, no staff/faculty (neither can shift to another job/school then just come back), no accreditation for the school or its programs...No football team, basketball, or any sports.
I am still angry about SCSU & this attempt to close the school. The vote was a surprise. Their plan was to sneak this through. It's retaliation because the current president, Elsey started cleaning house. There has been such a concerted effort to destroy SC State from the inside & when they couldn't threaten Elsey out they came up with shutting down the school to force his resignation. But they've wanted this all along. Gov. Haley & the Republicans in SC don't see the point in keeping SC State alive...they would rather divy up the (honestly meager) support between their pet schools. They don't really want SC State's students. Just the athletes & the money. I'm so angry. To close down SC State for a year is to ruin it. No accreditation, no way to recruit, & (the pervasive hope of these racist, underhanded Republicans) no chance that students who don't get kicked out in that year won't risk uprooting their education. The whole plan is designed to steal & destroy.
