For the clothing swap prompt at hxh_69min! I couldn't resist the idea when it popped into my head. I wanted to colour this one but didn't have time, maybe some other day...!

"To kraul" ('kraulen') means 'to card your fingers in one's hair' in German. It is a Very Important Verb.

MERMAIDS
*
When Ikalgo wakes up, he’s very far from home, and there’s a mythical, impossible creature peering down at him. Ikalgo stays still for just a moment before he compresses himself and melts into the cracks between the rocks on the ocean floor.
"Why’d you do that? I’m not gonna hurt you."
There’s nothing in the words that should make Ikalgo relax and start oozing himself back out of the rock cracks, but the tone is more bored and curious than cajoling, murderous or in any way violent.
Octopuses who want to live to be squids gotta learn to differentiate that sort of difference.
He stops himself from shooting straight back to the cracks when he sees the creature in front of him: a mer. But he can’t stop himself from gaping. “You don’t exist,” he blurts. Then he snaps his mouth shut, because lore said that if you got a mer angry, life could become very painful for you.
Luckily for Ikalgo, the mer laughs. “I never heard that one before! Is everyone from where you’re from this funny?”
"Where I’m from?" Ikalgo asks. Very warily he takes his eyes off the mer and looks around, and the reality of the situation dawns on him: the algea is wrong. The rocks are all the wrong colour and shape. And right in front of him, there’s a mer.
Mers are awful creatures, says the lore. They’re clawed and can survive both in shallow and deep waters, and some versions even say they can survive in air. Mers are fast, always hungry, and enjoy playing with their food.
Ikalgo floats a little sideways and studies the mer in front of him. It’s probably male, because his colours are very bright and saturated, and he’s lithe, and he’s no longer than a dolphin. Ikalgo kind of expected mers to be bigger. Perhaps this one is young? Could be. Maybe? Ikalgo is too confused to be able to think things through.
"You must’ve been asleep for a long time," the mer muses. "Long enough to get caught by the current and drift over."
Ikalgo is a grown octopus. He knows better than to get carried away by currents. ”I do not get carried away by currents!” he says emphatically, waving all 8 of his tentacles and sending himself into an unexpected spin.
The mer laughs again; he contemplates the cracks between the rocks again, wondering if they would swallow him and send him back home, if he asked nicely enough.
He doesn’t think so.
