so, heres the once-ler with a gift for you!
Hey Miru! Hope you're doing great. I was wondering how much you knew about color theory and if it helped you in your art, or did you just wing it?
I have a hard time understanding color theory so I appreciate your personal experience.
Hi Sara! I understand nothing about colour theory 😂 I struggle so, so much, every single time..
I only know the basics, like: -what a colour's hue, saturation, and value mean -which pairs of colours are complementary -choosing a different hue from the base colour when adding shadows (but this isn't a hard rule) -colour is light and can reflect off of nearby surfaces
Other than those things, what I rely on mostly is my instinct. I look at the picture as a whole and I think, "do the colours look good?" If the answer is no, then I try to guess which colour is the one that needs adjusting, like maybe I notice that this pink is way too saturated compared to everything else, or maybe I notice that there wasn't enough contrast in my shading in this area, or maybe the skin is looking way too green for the lighting that I was going for. So then I go and adjust its hue/saturation/value experimentally, moving the sliders gradually until there's a lightbulb in my brain that lights up - telling me it finally fits with the rest of the picture. And I keep doing that throughout my colouring process, sometimes going back to the same areas to adjust them further until I'm satisfied. It's TOUGH, and it takes a long time...but at least my ability to recognize what looks out of place has gotten better with experience!
It helps to have a colour and lighting plan in mind, so you have a goal instead of just randomly putting colours down. And it also helps to take breaks, because our eyes could get too used to staring at the same colours for hours, which then overloads the colour-detecting cells in our retinas, which then affects our colour perception!
THANK YOU SO MUCH SARA AGAIN <3 i am so so sooooo happy that you commissioned again and made this piece it was a real challenge OMG i wanted it to look good <33🫶💖
