It's been four days since an asteroid tore a hole in the sky over Chelyabinsk, scaring the crap out of the city's inhabitants and pretty much everyone else around the globe.
-500 kt! If the air burst occurred any lower, that would have wiped out the city clean off the map!.
BBC: Up to 950 injured from Ural Mountains blast shockwave
The BBC reports that nearly 1000 people have reported injuries from the air blast over the Urals in the Chelyabinsk region, 930 miles east of Moscow. Witnesses reported sightings in Yekaterinburg and Kazakhstan. Vladmir Putin promised aid for all affected by the blast. The BBC quoted one witness who described "a really bright flash" followed by a "huge explosion" and several "little explosions" minutes later.
The Associated Press reported fewer injuries but estimated the blast "released the energy of several kilotons" over the region.
Damn.
For reference: Russia, in (relatively) modern times, has had a bad track record with random objects falling dramatically from the sky.
