Jimmy Reed: On Blues Music

Question: Whoa! How is it possible for someone to like your music but not like blues music generally? I don't get it.

Jimmy Reed: Gee, how exactly am I supposed to answer this question? Well, it's possible that someone might not have had much exposure to blues music - and most of the blues music they've heard is in league with BB King, which has never been my style. I mean, I've always respected BB King as a musician - and I also paid my tributes to him, when he passed away. The style is not everyone's cup of tea, though - so it's understandable that many might think they don't like blues music, if BB King and the like is mainly what they heard in that genre. As such, if I'm the first blues artist they ever heard that falls outside the King style - it makes sense that they might think that way. That said, I highly recommend that people who are just starting to enjoy my music also check out John Lee Williamson - who is better known as Sonny Boy Williamson. Specifically, the first to be known as Sonny Boy Williamson. If it's the harmonica groove type of blues that you like, I would also recommend Little Walter and Snooky Pryor. Some more suggestions would be Pee Wee Hughes, Papa Lightfoot, and Willie Nix. I don't wish to force anything on anyone, but I do believe people should be aware that blues music is about as diverse a genre as... as rock or metal are. Some great contemporary blues harpists would include Kim Wilson and Mark Hummel. However, when all is said and done, different people like different things - and it's not too unusual for people to enjoy certain bands or musicians from musical genres that they might usually not care much for. That's what makes us all individuals.

There is never going to be a dumping conversation… So the ghosting really is a cowardly way out to force you to start the exit strategy, to start the dumping phase, to start to withdraw yourself, thus giving them more reason to end the relationship. You’re constantly dealing with all this insanity, this absolute madness that’s going on in their mind, combined with paranoia and great fear of abandonment. They suspect the abandonment the whole time, so they force it on the relationship. They absolutely need to force the victim to abandon them to then prove that the abandonment issue is real. It’s insanity. And many people have said, “Why couldn’t they just leave it alone and be loved?” I don’t know, but they can’t.
