Modern kimono outfit put together by Misamaru. Pants are comfy monpe (Billy Matsunaga has a video on how to make one, see below) and top kimono seems to be a repurposed mofuku (mourning kimono) cut short.
OP stresses they sometimes received DM staying “you shouldn’t cut kimono” or things like that. I personally strongly disagree: kimono are clothes and are meant to be worn. If repurposing gives them a second life: it’s GREAT. This has been done historically for centuries: stained/old kimono would be made into juban, haori, or mompe for example. Even silk threads were reused to make beautiful temari balls.
I am not super fond of seeing obi used as table runners or whatever, but let’s be honest: it’s always better than throwing them away (in Japan, it’s not unusual to have old kimono and obi throw in the trash because people simply don’t know what to do with them...).
Circular fashion is fashion, let’s give it the love it deserves :D
