Greek socialist leader Fofi Gennimata died on Monday at an Athens hospital at 57. She was diagnosed with a relapse of cancer earlier in October.
On October 11 she was admitted to Athens’ Evangelismos Hospital with an intestinal obstruction. She died “after a years’ long battle and despite the efforts of her attending physicians,” the hospital’s administration said in a statement on Monday, expressing its condolences to her family.
Gennimata, leader of the socialist party PASOK and the center-left coalition Movement for Change, withdrew from the race to elect a new leader for the party that is due to take place in December. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008.

Alongside that, position for the overall JKT48 Captain Melody held before will be given to Shania Junianatha (Shanju), previously Team J captain.
As for the individual to be Team J’s new captain, that position was given to Priscillia Sari Dewi (Sisil).
The next day during Kimi wa Melody Handshake Event, Devi Kinal Putri announced her graduation and will be helping JKT48 from behind the scenes alongside Melody as a JOT staff.
In the wake of the devastating wildfires that have ripped through the country, continuing in several areas, opposition parties were in a critical mood Wednesday regarding the government’s response or lack thereof.
“It is provocative that ministers and the prime minister indulge in self-admiration, that they supposedly had a plan that was implemented,” said a statement by the main opposition.
“Let [Prime Minister Kyriakos] Mitsotakis assume, even for the first time in his political career, the political responsibility toward the citizens who saw their properties and houses reduced to ashes, instead of making completely protected visits at 8 a.m. to avoid meeting them,” leftist SYRIZA added.
The leader of centrist KINAL, Fofi Gennimata, bemoaned that “the civil protection system was tested and once again failed.”
“The government does not have a plan for prevention and immediate response,” she said.
Similar sentiments were echoed by the communist KKE, nationalist Greek Solution and leftist MeRA25.
Greek opposition parties sharply criticized the New Democracy government saying that it has huge responsibilities for the situation in the hotspot of Moria and the fire that destroyed it.
“Today’s tragedy in Moria demonstrates the criminal responsibilities of (Prime Minister Kyriakos) Mitsotakis and (Migration Policy and Asylum Minister Notis) Mitarakis,” said main opposition, left-wing SYRIZA said on Wednesday.
“New Democracy condemns the local community, the refugees and the migration to misery.”
SYRIZA accussed the goverment that in its election campaign it promised to close the Moria hotspot but the only thing it achieved was to receive a structure hosting 5,600 people and to exceed 20,000 before it started the de-congestion program.
It accused the Prime Minister of turning Greece in a warehouse of souls because he did not press for a comprehensive EU initiative. “With its choices, the government led to today’s tragic result in Moria,” SYRIZA said.
The left-wing party called on everyone to refuse turning the islands into prison and asked for immediate European initiatives of solidarity and coordination.
The government’s responsibility as well as that of the Ministers for Migration Policy and Citizen Protection are enormous,” socialist Movement for Change (KINAL)/PASOK said.
“If there were provocateurs, as they claim, they must resign as they were the ones who let them act uncontrollably,” KINAL said.
It added that the government has lost control of the hosting structures. It ignored the de-congestation and maintained the jungle conditions and hid the growing problem behind communication fireworks of the responsible Ministry. KINAL added hat “if it is an arson, as all indicate, then Justice must intervene.”
Communist party KKE said that the government has enormous responsibility for the fire and demanded the decongestion of the camp.
Far-right Eliiniki Lysi said all asylum-seekers should be placed in uninhabited islands and illegal migrants should be deported as soon as possible.

Nikos Androulakis has been elected the new leader of socialist party Movement for Change (KINAL/PASOK). According to first results on Sunday evening, the 42-year-old politician gathered 68.42% of the 206,000 votes, while former prime minister Giorgos Papandreou received 31.58%.
Papandreou but also PM Mitsotakis called the new leader and congratulated him before the final results. Mitsotakis also invited him for a “chat” in the following days.
On the first round of leadership elections, last Sunday, a total of 270,000 participated in the vote.
Sadly, the new leader will not be able to represent the party in the Greek Parliament as he is an elected member of the European Parliament since 2014.
KINAL/PASOK is the third largest party in Greek Parliament with 22 MPs.
Will he resign from the MEP position? First analyses say “Hardly!”
Nikos Androulakis is a civil engineer by profession. His origin is from Arkalochori, Crete.
He is considered to be “moderate” – whatever this means – and he refrained to take clear position on main issues during debates with other leadership candidates.
MEP Nikos Androulakis (S&D) has won the first round of internal elections of the Greek socialist party (Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement – Pasok), with 37% of the vote. He will now compete for the party’s leadership in the second round with former Prime Minister George Papandreou, who got 27.8%. Pasok’s elections are crucial for Greek politics. The party is expected to be a kingmaker for the next government: either collaborating with the ruling New Democracy party (EPP) or with the main opposition leftist Syriza party.
