Notes on their backstory:

Sans sees Chara as his own family, a young one despite her being an almost grown up adult.

Sans visits Toriel back then out of curiosity and admiration, but slowly lost feelings towards her not only for Chara and Asriel, but for Asgore and his own sake.

Sans once almost snapped at Toriel for not letting Asgore the closure he needed and Toriel being stubborn about it.

Chara still loves their parents dearly, even if Toriel was too prioritized to be a teacher and taking care of children while Asgore continues his duty as King for his people.
