Three steps to great skill

Three steps to gain great skill:

Incubation

Difficulty

Memory.

               All skill, as all things, begin in womb of thought. Here skill must be protected and grown, give enough time, and practice the skill will emerge as it is brought to life.

               Great skill can only be achieved when there is sufficient challenge. A task to easily done will not cause one's skill to grow. Thus great skill can only be achieved by overcoming great difficulty. Not once, but time and again. With each challenge the skill grows until it reaches greatness. How great can a skill grow? It grows as great as the challenge it overcomes.

               A great skill must become memorized. It must be practiced over and over until it becomes so engrained in memory it is as familiar as walking, breathing, a pumping heart.

Three treasures of inspiration

Three treasures of inspiration: 

Vision: Inspiration gives us a way to see beyond what is there, but to what could be. 

Endurance: Inspiration will push us. It will drive one long past the time others would give up. Hold onto inspiration, and you will go farther, longer, then you ever thought you could.  

Journeys: Each inspiration is the first step of a journey.  Some times it’s short, some times it takes a life time, maybe several life times, but they are all Journeys. In these journeys we experience our fears, and our joys.  Where has your inspiration taken you?

Three things that obscure vision

Three things that Obscure vision: 

Fear, Defensiveness, Righteousness 

Fear: Fear causes us to hyper-focus on one thing. We often can see nothing else including the obvious solution to our fear. Think of a time you were afraid of something, someone, or some outcome, how did you behave? what did you do or not do? The next time you fear, will you learn to keep your vision broad?

Defensiveness: When we are defensive, we loose sight of many things. We often can’t see where there other person is coming from, our “shields” are in the way. Denial, rationalization, projection...all are defenses our mind uses to protect our Ego, yet blocks our vision. When next you feel defensive, can you have the courage to lower your shields and look at the truth? 

Righteousness: When we are righteous, we we often fail to see any other possibility but our own rightness. The world become black and white, right and wrong. Yet the world is a swirl of so many colors and shades.  We loose sight of who is our enemy and who is our friend, often times striking out at both or even the innocent.  When was the last time you felt righteous? How did that work out for you? Are you proud of your behavior? The next time you feel righteous, are you able to still maintain your vision? Can you see all the colors and view points?

Overcoming fear

Three things to overcome fear: Passion, Allies, Wisdom.

Passion: When we are truly and strongly “passionate” about something, it will over power our sense of fear. It could be in the form of great anger.  If we become angry enough we can over come our fear. Such as in a case of social injustice. We can over come our fear of social stigma and exclusion to right the wrong.  At the same time, Anger can overpower our fear of punishment and lead to violence. Like wise the passion of love too can over come fear. When we love strongly we are willing to sacrifice ourselves despite our fear to protect that which we love. 

Allies: When we are filled with fear we call our friends and family to aid us, or to just be with us. We call upon our coworkers and employers.  So too we can call upon our spiritual allies as well to help us face and manage our fears. We all know we are stronger in greater numbers then alone. 

Wisdom: Many of our fears are born of ignorance. It is truly said “that which we don’t understand we fear.”  Wisdom and knowledge then are very important to the overcoming of many of our fears in everyday life. When you find yourself afraid, seek to learn about that which scares you. Be it scorpions or a diagnosis.
