John felt so underprepared (and lied to/betrayed) by Henry, Mary, etc that he wanted his kids to be overprepared, putting guns in their hands early.
It’s what he wanted for himself: to be able to defend himself, to be tough, to be cold and unlike his natural crybaby self, to be self-sufficient. Ready. Alert. Lean and mean.
And it got so twisted up. :(
When Prime Mary read his journal, she not only emphasized with his prep due to what she’d seen in her life, but she agreed, hurtling herself back into hunting to eradicate all the danger in the world via BMoL.
