“What good’s an emperor without any subjects? Ask for a kingdom to rule and it’s the people who entrust it to you. That’s the only reason I’m emperor! And you’re fine with it all going to hell? What do you think I’m doing here?” The people—his people—fled only to come face to face with a wall of arrows. The castle and the countryside and everyone who lived there vanished in the flames. “Why was I allowed to lived on in disgrace? Why was I allowed to escape? I was given a kingdom to rule and it died. I would have willingly given my life for them. But I was told another kingdom had been entrusted to me. That’s the only reason I hung on.”
