Some thoughts on the Hero of Men and his era:
Gustaf was the King during this era and was married to a woman from the Wind Tribe (he himself was distantly descended from the tribe as well).
The Hero of Men lied about his age to enter the military. He was a low-ranking knight when the war (against hordes of monsters) began. Though, when battle first became devastating, he ran. He tried to save as many people as he could in the process, though.
When the Light Force and the Picori Blade were bestowed upon the Hero of Men, they were too much for a mortal to handle at the same time without experience— so a Minish Sage stayed behind and taught him how to use it. This was his companion character of sorts.
The Light Force was soon entrusted to the Princess at the time, as we see in the stained glass, and she used it far more effortlessly than the Hero (though he had become proficient in it by then). Sealing it in her body, however, had side effects. For a time after using the Light Force, her hair was turned golden and her body constantly emitted a faint glow. Any time the Picori Blade seal was almost disturbed, she was capable of smiting any beast that leaked out immediately.
