As goofy, silly, and inept as it ultimately is, King Kong Lives does feature shots like these in its climax, accompanied by John Scott’s heroic Kong theme:

Though, the same scene does feature a shot where you can hear John Guillerman telling Peter Elliott (Kong) to “kick!” just before he whirls around and kicks a tank. So, you have to take the good with the bad.

December 19: John Guillermin’s King Kong Lives was released 30 years ago today.

It's a sequel to the 1976 remake of King Kong, which just celebrated its 40th anniversary two days ago.

King Kong Lives was a pretty major movie upon its release in Japan, much more so than it was in the West, and it got two specially-made posters to mark its Nippon release- one by the immortal Noriyoshi Ohrai, and this one, by an unknown artist. Both are incredible in their own ways, and both have a unique take on Kong: Ohrai's as a menacing, demonic herald of doom, and this one as a rampaging lunatic. Something about his unnaturally unhinged jaw is, somehow, terrifying and hilarious at the same time.
