“Good times all the time” Interview with King Kuda
1) Would you first like to introduce yourselves and tell us a bit about “King Kuda”?
We're King Kuda, a 4-piece alternative band from Guildford.
2) How did the band form?
We all moved into the same house when we started uni. We had all the ingredients there, so forming a band just seemed like the natural thing to do. We messed about for a year or so, living the standard University lifestyle, but it wasn't until about a year in that it all got going properly. The whole "go out, get pissed, wake up feeling like shit, repeat" thing got a bit old, so we just stayed in and wrote tunes. It was the best, we got fully addicted to It. Before we knew it, a year had gone by and we'd written a set full of songs. Now here we are, ready to share it with everyone.
3) What are your background in music? Who and what inspired you to pursue a career in the industry?
We've all come from pretty different musical backgrounds. Chris was taught guitar by a hippy in his shed, Ollie learnt classical guitar for 6 years before he started playing electric, Charlie was a prodigy on the drums since he started, and Perry played guitar in an acoustic band before he switched to the bass. It wasn't until we played live though that we knew we wanted to do this forever. There’s a moment when you're on stage smashing it, and you've got a whole room of people absolutely buzzing off tunes you've written. It's like your first hit of crack, there's no going back from it.
4) Would you like to tell us a bit about your recent releases? And what track would you say best represents King Kuda?
We put an EP out a couple of months ago, lately / halfway to Neptune. We wouldn't say that one represents us better than the other; it's when you listen to them together that you can start to get an idea of what we're about. It's been cool seeing people's reactions so far, watching arguments start over which one they like more etc, but the overall reception has been great. They were two of the first tunes we wrote together, and we've come a long way since then. We can't wait to see what kind of damage our next single is going to do.
5) What would you say has been your biggest achievement to date?
Our front room. We've spent so long turning it into the ultimate jamming space. It's like our mecca. We write in there, record in there, rehearse in there. Pretty much anything we've done has started in that room. Its crazy hearing our tunes get played on the radio or watching people dance and sing along to them and thinking "we wrote this in our sitting room!"
6) What’s your favourite song to play live? And why?
“Who am I”. We all have a special little connection to that tune. It went through so many different iterations before we finally settled on something we were completely happy with, so in a way it's kind of grown with the band. It's the perfect way to close the set, and we all get such a buzz every time we play it.
7) If you could choose one band to support, who would it be and why?
We'd love to support Liam Gallagher, purely because the after party would be complete madness. But if we're going to be sensible, then definitely Superfood. We absolutely rinsed their last album, and they always kill it with their live show. It'd be a wicked time supporting those guys.
8) Do you have any upcoming gigs? Where and when?
We're playing Tooting Tram & Social on the 24th of February and The Star on the 27th supporting Me and the Moon. We’ve also got at a show at The Monarch in Camden on the 8th of March with This Feeling which were absolutely buzzing for. All the details will be on our Facebook.
9) What does music mean to you?
Good times all the time.
10) Where can we find you on social media?
You can find us on Facebook and Instagram @kingkudamusic
11) Any last words?
We've been working hard getting things ready for our next single, Wildflower. If all goes to plan, it's gonna be mega. Keep an eye out!
