Wine of the Week #2: 2012 King Estate Pino Gris
Quick Hits (taken from wine.com):
Relevant Critical Acclaim: Wine Enthusiast score - 90; "This is a classic vintage for Oregon Pinot Gris, and King Estate sets the benchmark. Lovely texture, structure and minerality are on display, along with rich pear and apple flavors sculpted by balancing acidity. The well-defined finish continues smoothly with a streak of fresh lime."
Alcohol By Volume (ABV): 13.0%
Winemaker’s Notes: This beautiful light straw and emerald wine has aromas of raspberry, grapefruit, honey dew melon, lime zest, floral notes, and a hint of honey. The lemon-lime, green apple, white peach, pineapple and a hint of spice flavors lead to to a viscous mouthfeel, crisp acidity, and a blanaced finish.
Our Thoughts:
We picked up on some floral aroma in the wine at first sniff, as well as some other fruits we couldn't quite place. It had a very strong, pleasing scent, but had a surprising lack of flavor given the strong smell. It was more of a "physical flavor", given that it had a strong bite on the back of the tongue, and in the sinuses, that lingered a while after swallowing. Furthermore, we noted some acidity, as well as a rather strong ethanol vapor feeling in the roof of the mouth, even though it is only 13% ABV. It was a decent wine, but not our favorite. We were expecting a bit more, given the incredibly complex/pleasing scent, but overall, we enjoyed it, and finished the bottle.
