King Leopold II of Belgium Establishes the Congo Free State
On July 1, 1885, the Congo Free State was officially established under the personal rule of Leopold II of Belgium. Unlike a typical Belgian colony, the territory was controlled as the king’s private possession rather than as a state directly governed by Belgium. Leopold claimed the project was intended to bring trade, Christianity, and modernization to Central Africa.
The creation of the Congo Free State followed European competition for African territories during the late 19th-century imperial era, including the agreements made at the Berlin Conference. Under Leopold’s administration, the Congo became a major source of valuable resources, especially rubber and ivory.
However, the regime became infamous for its brutal exploitation of the Congolese population. Forced labor, violence, and severe abuses were used to increase production, leading to widespread suffering and international condemnation. The atrocities committed under Leopold’s rule became one of the most controversial examples of European colonial exploitation in Africa.
Have you heard of King Leopold II of Belgium and how he ran the Congo Free State like a private death camp? It's a horrific story of colonialism and greed. He exploited the Congolese people, forcing them to work in harsh conditions, cutting off their hands if they didn't meet their rubber quotas, and killing millions in the process. The estimated death toll is between 10 to 20 million people. This is a dark stain on human history and a reminder of the atrocities that can occur when power is abused. watch full video: https://youtu.be/LLZkIS3yyqw?list=PLjBgcvtYPpOStiXCX1octyb7Li5I4LiXM
