All the love Will had for his father had dimmed down over the years until it was barely a flicker. There were moments, he admits, that he couldn't help but hate his dad. He could never figure out what he did that earned him all the contempt he received from the man. There was even a time he believed there was truth in the endless list of his perceived failings ( he was W E A K, not man enough, useless, stupid, a C O W A R D ) but Will was tired. So tired of beating himself up. The only thing that angered him now was the way the man brought sadness and pain to the two people he loved the most: Jonathan and his mom.
But Lonnie mostly left them alone now, didn’t he? Their interactions were few and far between. Will found that letting hate for someone else fester for so long was just as taxing as hating yourself. Eventually the only emotions he could muster when faced with Lonnie Byers were pity and fear.
Strong hands flailed and clawed desperately at the young boy's face. The scratches bled and stung but proved otherwise futile. Will only felt his own grip tighten; forced to witness the older man choking and gurgling as the light faded from his eyes.
「 Let him go ! Stop it ! 」
Will screamed over and over at the darkness inside of him; inside his head. He didn't want this. He didn't want this blood on his hands.
「 PLEASE— stop ! 」
