"Can you hear it?" Crowley asked, not taking his eyes of the sky, looking far and beyond human eyesight, through the galaxies and every star he had once made. He nestled in there, safe among the bodies of burning gas. Their warmth radiated into his soul and melted the ice that had built there for so many years, he allowed it to heat up and become alive once more. So when he opened his eyes to meet Aziraphale's again, his eyes were lit with that same star fire.
"Hear what?" His senses were all but focused on the burning yellow eyes staring into his own.
"The wind, it's singing our names with the leaves and grass as its voice." Crowley took a step closer to Aziraphale, not letting his eyes falter. "It's a song of gratitude, for promising a tomorrow to come."
Aziraphale visibly swallowed, so close to the demon their noses were almost touching. It had only been a mere couple of hours since they had averted the apocalypse, and they really should be heading home, it was begging to get awfully late. But they found themselves wanting to stay just a little bit longer, the time stretching for each passing minute. Not wanting this – whatever this moment was, to pass, not yet.
"You always had a connection to nature that I don't think even the holiest of angels processes. Earth saw you and recognized you for what you are and allowed you into their roots."
Crowley held a hand up and brushed Aziraphale's lips ever so softly with his thumb, the angel shuddered at the touch, closing his eyes.
"And yet nature never stood a chance to compete against your beauty, dear angel."
Aziraphale opened his eyes again just to see Crowley press their lips together. A soft ginger touch with a question in its flavour. Was this okay? They had done it, the Earth was here to stay and so were they.
Aziraphale returned the kiss with the feeling of devotion that had matured through millennia, that had grown into what he had realised to be love.
Crowley laced their hands together and Aziraphale could feel, in that moment what the demon must be feeling each passing moment and had since the day he had been placed upon this earth alongside the humans and himself. Aziraphale felt how deep the roots of the Earth went, so many lives of people, plants and animals alike tangled up in it. And to think that Heaven and Hell was just going to let it all go up in flames or white light? Let it all go to waste?
They had walked among the humans since they were first created, Earth had provided a home for them.
Parting from the kiss they looked at each other with newfound understanding, safety to be themselves and to be together. Hands still interlocked they looked up together now, and saw the stars wink back at them, a shooting star raining down upon the Earth. It was protected, and anyone be damned who ever tried to take it from them again.
