Aziraphale listened with curious ears as the redheaded stranger of an angel exclaimed in distress what would happen to his beautiful universe he had only just created, that he had worked so hard on. After a little while he leaned forward, smile brilliant and simply told the other angel. “I’ll help.” Naturally, this didn’t go down as either angel had planned, and they fell — together.

Ed tried to calm his thoughts with the memory of the day Oswald had casually mentioned marriage over breakfast. It had been out of the blue, like it was the most natural thing in the world to say while half reading the newspaper. Ed had been so startled he had fled the scene like a coward, flinging himself into the car, needing to quiet his rampant mind within the rush of the city. He sat down by a fountain in Robinson Park, watching couples giggle and hold hands. Some youngsters sharing an innocent, naive love, openly kissing and pressing themselves as close to one another as humanly possible. Couples that were satisfied with the gentle touch of each others hands, an occasional nudge into their lover’s shoulder in order to call for attention, sharing a mature and rich look stemming from many years of established, deep love. The variations were endless, and Ed had started to feel dizzy, not at all finding the calm or the answers he had gone looking for. Could Edward ever be one of those people? Was it even possible?

Next thing Ed knew, he was taking a deep breath, eyes staring back at the wooden door leading into the town house filled with memories of anguish and fear. There is nothing more he wanted in that moment than to turn around and run, run until his legs stopped carrying him like he had done that night —promising never to come back, yet here he was. He turned, ready to succumb to his fears when a hand grabbed his shoulder. “We came this far, don’t let him rule you any further.” Ed gave him a timid nod, still insecure, turned back and knocked. It felt odd to be a visitor —uninvited at that, of your own home. Still this wasn’t his home, not anymore. Oswald and his apartment had become far more than this grimey old stone house had ever been, sometimes it even felt like they could be part of a family —was that even a real concept, more importantly, was it something Edward deserved? The door came flying open, a tall, lanky man with neatly combed back brown hair stuck his head out. They had not only become partners with a motive to escape these past nine months, no. The comfort of their friendship offered far more than that, a calm he had not felt since the time Oswald had rescued him from Arkham, given him a purpose, a life to fight for. Meaning in the turmoil that had always stormed inside his mind. He had felt like it was home. Gotham was not his home, he had no desire to fight or put his life on the line for this pile of ash the city was rapidly coming to. Oswald was his home, perhaps he had been for a long time, only Ed had been too blind to see it. Regardless, he could not stay here to listen to the screams of the city dying with Oswald in the front lines. He was over this! Nothing good had ever come out of the frantic devotion blinding his judgement and calculating mind like a lovesick teenager. He was better than this, smarter at the very least. Yet the way those hazel eyes deepen as their gaze locks, darkening with unspoken words of something Oswald has yet to decipher —had him falling back into that deep rabbit hole of loving Edward Nygma to the extent he could feel the world shatter around it and the only thing remaining was the way Ed’s warmth was radiating from his skin and under Oswald’s many layers. “Focus, Ed. What is the last you remember?” “Oswald…” Ed breathed, trying to focus back on the real world, as it seemed to spin all around him. What was real? This all seemed like one of the worst nightmares he had ever encountered. Even worse than…. He shrugged the recollection of flashes from when he had been deep in a frozen doze. “He...“ he trailed off, shaking off last image of the disappointed eyes before everything stopped, enclosed by his chilly prison. “I saw him,” His eyes glued into the floor, too scared to look up at the man he barely recognized anymore. Arms clenched around himself, trying to stop the persistent shivers running through him. “Earlier,” he added. “Then I ran. I could not bear to hear another second of his pathological lying self and attempts at justifications.” “And you came here?” Jim asked for clarification. “I… Didn’t know where else to go.” Ed swallowed a nervous chuckle as he could hear the truth in his own words. He didn’t. No friends, no allies. No ace left in his sleeve. To hear that everyone had moved on without him, like he had never even existed? Maybe he didn’t belong in this world anymore. Before Jim had a chance to answer, a female detective came bursting through the doors. “Sorry to interrupt Mr. Gordon, but there has been an incident.” “What kind?” “Witnesses say to have seen a literal catfight between Catwoman and Magpie inside Gotham Museum of Antiquities —allegedly interrupted an ongoing tour to snatch a jewel right in front of the guide and complete chaos erupted. Batman have been alerted and is supposedly on his way...” The commissioner cursed as he went to retrieve his coat. “Since when is Magpie out of Blackgate? As for those other two, it’s to be expected they won’t play nice, apparently my job here is to be a preschool teacher rather than commissioner.” “I’m sorry Ed, I have to run.” Jim gave him one last sympathetic glance before rushing out.
