Hi Kimball, I admire your work so much. What is your process for making comics, start to finish?

Aw!!  I like your work too!  

Uh, my process...for writing stuff I always have like a bunch of stories in my head and develop them little by little just set off by what’s happening in my life or what I want to imagine.  And there just comes a moment where it all feels lined up so I just write!  Like just write the whole thing right then.  Or sometimes I have a style, or a theme, and develop an idea around it?  Lately I have been wanting to do quick comics because of health limits, and because I want to be creating lots of stuff.  So I developed styles that would be able to be done quick, and ideas around those styles.  

Like for Useless, I stick a camera on my head and get video which I get frames from and fiddle around with layering them on top of each other.  I have it scripted out for the first “book” which might be something like 200 pages.  Safety I do each page on like...what are they, 2″x1″ pages?  Or something.  Small.  I have an outline all done for Safety, and haven’t written all of it but a bunch.  Sketchbook Comic I write first and then put the writing in my sketchbook and then do sketchbook stuff around it.  I somewhat pay attention to the text!  And group together types of drawings around sections.  But otherwise it’s just my sketchbook.  And I write it one book at a time.  And uhh, Boxes I have an outline of the general arc of the comic, but improvise the content of each page as I come to it.

But with some projects I have a thematic idea or a sensation I want to express and try to figure out the best style for getting that across.

Uhh basically it varies!  Not sure if this is start to finish, but it varies so much that this is a hard question to answer without talking forever.
