Sometimes I give the French the benefit of a doubt (like maybe they dont know the connotations of Daddy) and then I remember that in my mothers town theres a bar that's called the Shag cafe and... yeah no I just hate French people ahahah
Considering “daddy” has been in use as a sexual term since at least the 1680s (I believe it was slang for “pimp” but don’t quote me on that) I’d say giving them the benefit of the doubt is all too generous. It was also gender neutral iirc, so if one was considered to be domineering or powerful one might be referred to as “daddy” as a means of innuendo.
The reason I know this is because someone wrote an 1890s romance back in my publishing house days and the words “who’s your daddy” were used, and after much research and emotional anguish on my part had to concede that yes, it was historically accurate, and yes it could be used in that context.
And now I am passing this terrible knowledge onto the internet, like Frankenstein watching his monster lumber off the slab and down the valley unto the unsuspecting town below. God, what have I done.
