When you woke up the next morning, the room was already filled with the smell of bacon and eggs. For a second you wondered if that's just the stroke talking you convinced yourself you're having multiple times a day because life can't be real. There is too much shit happening all at once that sometimes, everything just seems to float away. You just wanted to forget everything that happened in the last 24 hours, even if it was nice to have had someone that took care of you.
Jack had convinced you to take his bed for the night, sleep for as long as you need to and gave you space to cry yourself to sleep. And you did, after thinking about how his dick twitched underneath you and how lovely it would feel to grind back against him. You had to stop thinking like this, because sooner or later that would cause problems. Jack is your attending and your boss, if anyone found out you're thinking about bounching on your bosses co-
Alright. Enough. You shouldn't even be here to begin with.
His bedroom was kept clean and tidy, his clothes neatly folded on top of his dresser, like some psychopath was living in here, preparing the clothes they plan to wear the night before. He probably learned that in the army. Do they learn how to tie knots as well or was that the fire department....
You got out of bed, still wearing his clothes he gave you last night and made your way down to corridor into the kitchen.
Jack was sitting on one of the kitchen chairs leaned against the marble kitchen counter, scrolling on his phone when he heard your footsteps. He didn't turn around when he pointed to the chair next to him. "Mornin' sleepy head. Made you breakfast".
Breakfast. Damn, Dr. Abbot. Didn't know you could cook.
"Thank you. That's very nice of you" you replied, trotting over and taking the seat right next to him. You looked at him, your eyes wandering up and down and it doesn't take you long to notice his wet hair. Did he shower?
"Can i help you?" he grinned, eyes glued to his phone. "Watch it, I'm charging for autographs. Cash only."
"Cocky this early in the morning" you mumbled, heat rushing to your cheeks. You picked up the fork and stabbed one of the eggs on your plate.
"Woah, what did the egg do to you?" he chuckled and finally put his phone down, turning his body on the chair to fully face you. You were already devouring your breakfast, moaning at how fucking good those eggs and bacon were.
You could feel his eyes burning into your skin, the way he looked you up and down appreciating how beautiful you looked in his clothes. "Good, right?"
"Don't get ahead of yourself, old man"
"I beg your pardon, little girl?"
"Oh you heard me right" you giggled, stuffing the last piece of bacon into your mouth before setting the fork down. "I called you an old man. But little girl? Really, that's all you can come up with?"
"Easy here, kiddo. I have a lot of nicknames reserved for the people who deserve them."
"Oh yeah?" you turned to face him with a devious smile. "Apparently that includes your first name, *Jack*." Oh you were definitely testing the waters now.
He stayed quiet for a moment, his eyes locked on yours and it looked like he was fighting with himself, struggling not to cross a line that had already been crossed in silence a while ago.
"I told you to call me Dr. Abbot, and you know why-"
"Yeah yeah yeah, because Jack is for friends and for the ones you fuck" you interrupted, not caring what might happen next. The urge to tease him, to see how far he would let you push, was too strong to resist.
"I'm warning you, *sweetheart*," he whispered, clearly hoping you would back down. He didn't want to have this conversation with you right now. He knew you wanted him. You always had a crush on him, and Jack wasn't stupid. He could read the signs, put one and two together. But he also understood there were unresolved emotions inside you that needed an outlet. He just wasn't sure you knew exactly what you were asking for.
But, what did you have to lose? If you couldn't pay for your degree after losing your job, you might as well go all in. Impulsive decisions you'd probably end up regretting.
"Sweetheart? Wow, that's like super lame," you giggled, shaking your head. You had to know if he would stop you.
Something in Jack's eyes darkened, he looked like he was debating his next move. And then he gave in. His hand came up to your face, cupping your cheek, his thumb brushed over your lower lip, pressing down gently and forcing your mouth to part.
"*Babygirl,* I don't think you understand." He leaned in until your noses touched. "You're playing with fire."
A smile crept to your lips and you couldn't handle his intense stare.
"I-I like fire" you stuttered, the words slightly slurred by the pressure on your lip. Heat flooded your face. You tried to hold back a moan but failed. Jack chuckled in amusement.
"It's pathetic how much you are trying" he whispered before easing the pressure on your lip. Jack watched your face turn bright red as his lips slowly moved to your ear.
"I saw the way you arched your back last night," he whispered, "like you wanted me to touch you more then just tending to your wounds" He savored the way your hands suddenly pressed against his chest and your breathing faltered.
"J-Jack, I don't-"
"And don't get me wrong, i like a good fuck," he cut in, gripping both your wrists with his hands. "But that's all I do. I fuck. I don't do relationships. Because once you're underneath me..." His grip tightened as his tongue traced your earlobe, licking and biting down. You whined at the sharp sensation.
"You're going to be screaming my name, choking on my cock while I ruin you." He sucked on your earlobe, drawing another moan from you before he pulled back slightly. "and you're too precious for that. I would ruin you and I would enjoy every second of it. We both know you deserve better than that."
Jack released you and leaned back in his chair, putting distance between you. Aside from the bulge in his pants and his amused look on his stupid face, you noticed a shift in him. You could tell he was trying to backtrack in this very moment.
"Besides," he added, his voice calmer now "I'm your attending. I can't fuck my student. And after what happened with Marcus last night, I don't want to be the one who messes you up for the rest of your life. I won't take advantage of you in this vulnerable, truly fucked up situation."
It took you a solid minute to steady your breathing before you finally met his eyes and you wanted nothing more than his cock fucking you senseless. "I'm not vulnerable. I am fine, Jack."
Jack ran a hand through his damp hair, clearly trying to back off and make this situation less complicated than it already was.
"Yes, yes you are. I don't think you understand what you're asking for here."
"I'm not asking for anything, I just..."
"You like to test the waters, and you like to be a brat. I get it. I saw that the first time you stepped foot into the ER, alright? I saw the way you looked at me every time i was around. I get it, everyone wants a piece of cake."
"That's a very cocky way of admitting that you're hot" you just couldn't stop yourself.
Jack drew in a sharp breath, every fiber of his body trying to resist the urge to grab you by the throat. So he continued like nothing happened. "But I've made the mistake of crossing lines before. And i already crossed every professional line with you the second i stepped foot into the club and i shouldn't have come back. Secrets are thrilling but..." Jack sighed, running now both his hands through his curls.
"I don't think you understand how fucked up i am" He sounded so serious it nearly broke your heart.
"Jack, you're not fucked up," you tried but he convinced himself of the opposite a long time ago.
"Kiddo, I don't know how to tell you this." He fought to keep his voice steady. "I can't open up to someone again. Not emotionally. When I date, it's only sexual. I fuck. I destroy. You deserve someone who can keep up with you emotionally, someone who won't snap at you for breathing too loud or picking the wrong table at a restaurant. I scan every room before I take another step. I'm not your casual guy. You don't want me. You might like the idea of me bending you over and fucking a baby into you, but you don't want the reality of me waking up screaming at night because I can still feel my leg getting blown off."
His confession hung in the air and you noticed his hand shaking. His eyes avoided you for a moment and all the confidence he just had, seemed to have vanished into thin air.
"I need to be in control. And I don't think you can handle that."
You swallowed hard and you were at a loss of words. For someone that claims he's not good with emotions, every single little thing he does seemed to be driven by them. "Jack..what if-"
"You can fix me?" he blurted out in a mocking tone "Sweetheart, you can't fix me. No one can. Look, Marcus should be grateful I didn't put him in the hospital myself. I protected you, and...that's all it needs to be. We don't have to make this any more complicated than it already is." He pressed his palms against the sides of his head. "I fucked up. I crossed every line there is to cross with everything I said. I'm sorry."
"I know I shouldn't have pushed you like that. I crossed the line myself" you cut in this time.
You were slowly beginning to see past the facade of Dr. Jack Abbot. Behind the cocky, confident doctor was a young man haunted by demons and traumas you could barely imagine. The way he was standing there, his damp curls fell into his face, and the broken look in his eyes made you realize how much he hid behind that perfect, cocky mask.
He kept his distance, pushing up from his chair and walking around the kitchen counter to the fridge. He was clearly trying to hide how turned on he still was, and how mentally torn he felt by everything. His cock was pressing hard against the fabric of his boxer and the outline of his dick was visible through his pants. An image that would be burned into your retina for forever.
The fact that Jack couldn't decide if he should be dwell in old memories or fuck you on the counter, drove him nuts. He wanted the closeness and yet he wanted nothing more than to push people away from him. It was easier that way, he thought. No one would get hurt and there would be no one he had to take care of or worry about. But he feared that he already went way too far to avoid that.
"We both went too far" he mumbled, turning away from you to grab two mugs from the sink.
"Please, i'm not done with this conversation" You hopped down from your chair and came around the counter as well. "I'm sorry, really. You are my attending and...and i pushed things. I don't know why, i guess..i don't know, I think I was just trying to take my mind off things. I should have thought about how you felt during all of this instead of just teasing you."
Jack sighed and poured coffee into two mugs. "I know. That's why I'm not upset. I just lost control myself for a minute. I wanted to protect you, and seeing you vulnerable and crying... it reminded me of the darkest parts of myself. It made me angry to see someone else had caused it and some instinct in me jumped in and wanted to make up for it...maybe I'm more of a sadist than I thought. I told you, im fucked up"
You were facing his back, watching the muscles under his shirt contract as he finished pouring the coffee and you had to collect yourself. For someone claiming being bad with emotions, every word and action was based on them. You just wished he would allow himself to see that.
But there was nothing to add anymore, it felt like everything was already said.
"So... do we just go back to normal?" you whispered in hopes he wouldn't just kick you out right away.
He turned toward you and held out one of the mugs. "Well, have you thought about what I said last night?"
"About the..the money?" you asked, eyebrows furrowed as you took the mug from his hands. "I can't take your offer."
Jack looked at you like he had already expected that answer. "Why not?"
"I just... I can't. Not with you." You whispered, staring down into the dark liquid. "I can always go back to the club. Maybe Marcus will forgive me."
Jack held back a laugh. "Kiddo, there is no shot in hell he's just going to let you walk back through that door. The best thing that could happen is that he beats you up again."
You swallowed hard, biting your lower lip to keep the tears at bay as Marcus's face flashed in your mind. "And the worst?"
Jack stayed silent for a long moment. You both already knew the answer. He stepped closer until he was only inches away from you.
"The worst case is him torturing and killing you."
"He wouldn't... do *that*" you whispered, even though you knew Jack was right.
"I've seen enough of these fuckers out there. Raping the women sell the children. Don't be a fool. Your safety matters more."
His voice carried a bitter edge, like dwelling in memories that never seen the light of day before.
You reached up and gently squeezed his arm, trying to pull him back to the present. "What if i don't go back? Maybe I can find a different job in the meantime or.. or a different career. I'll be fine. Please don't worry about me, okay? I am truly sorry that i got you into this situation in the first place, you shouldn't be the one fixing it"
Jack lifted his head and shook it in disagreement. "No. I want to see you succeed. I'll pay for your tuition, your apartment, anything you need. You're a good student and you're almost done. Don't throw it all away just because your pride won't let you accept help."
"Why do you care so much?"
"Because I've seen what happens when people have their lives taken from them. How fast everything can fall apart. I always liked the way you work. You care about your patients and your colleagues. We need doctors like you." His eyes stayed locked on yours, a rare flicker of genuine vulnerability showing through.
"Please, don't make me beg. Take the offer. Or at least think about it."
You set the mug on the counter and let out a long breath. "FIne. Okay. I'll think about it."
Jack studied you for a moment, like he was trying to decide whether you were just saying that to end the conversation or if you actually meant it. He leaned back against the counter, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Don’t just say it to make me feel better," he said quietly. "If you’re going to think about it, actually think about it. It won't put me in any financial problems, i make enough money as is."
You nodded slowly, but your eyes drifted to his mouth for a second before you caught yourself. The air between you still felt thick from everything that had happened minutes earlier. And the way he seemed to care about you made your heart ache and your stomach flutter. None of what he explained made you want him any less, if anything, you wanted to keep testing the waters but most importantly, you wanted to get to know him. What motivated him, what keeps him up at night and what keeps him going after everything he's seen. But a part of you knew that it would take a long time, a lot of trust and a little bit of luck. He didn't seem too happy talking about anything that happened around his army time.
A small, tired smile tugged at his lips. "You’re still looking at me like you want to test me again."
"Maybe I do and maybe i just want to find out why you think you're so fucked up," you admitted, your voice softer now. "I know i might not be the right person to talk to about the things that keep you up at night but..."
Jack let out a long sigh, running a hand through his damp curls before he took a sip of his coffee. "It's not that its just.. i dont know. There is a lot you wouldn't understand"
The room went silent for a bit before you took the courage to keep pushing. "It's alright. I'm not claiming to understand, at all. All i am saying is that i will lend you my ear if you need someone to just...listen"
Silence. The only sound you could make out was the hum of the fridge behind him and somewhere further away, the faint tick of a clock. It drove you nuts. Your grandma had one of those and you eventually took out the batteries because the ticking made you go insane.
"Thanks, Kid. It's appreciate it. I don't rally have another response for any of this right now"
"that's fine, Jack. We can change the topic right now" you offered, hoping he wouldn't pick his recent offer as the topic.
"So uh" he muttered into his mug "Did you think my offer?"
Great.
"I meant what I said earlier," he continued, his tone more serious again. "I don’t do the emotional stuff. I’m not good at it. But that doesn’t mean I don’t care what happens to you. I’ve lost enough people who mattered. I’m not about to watch you spiral just because you’re too proud to accept help."
You thought about it for a long minute before crossing your arms and biting you lower lip. "If i accept the terms and conditions, what's in the fine print?"
Jack chuckled and tilted his head, a smile coming back to his lips. "You really are one of a kind. Fine print are rules we need to establish."
You raised an eyebrow. "Rules? You offered to pay everything that i am worried about. Like a sugar daddy, i didn't know that came with a lot of rules"
"Jesus Kid, you are gonna be the death of me" Jacks jaw tightened and he looked away for a second before he met your eyes again. "Yes, rules. Those are important. " His voice dropped lower.
" Rule number one - All cards on the table. We need to be honest with each other at all times. If you can't be around me anymore because it all just gets too much, you tell me. I don't like to be kept in the dark. Sound good?"
His response took you by surprise but you were fine with rules. It helped you understand what you're in for. "Okay. All cards on the table" you confirmed.
"Good girl." he patted you on your head, took his hand back really fast when he realized he's slipping up. "Sorry"
Your cheeks turned into a bright red, if he kept this up you'd be on your knees in a matter of seconds.
"W-what else?" you tried to steady your breath by closing your eyes. You couldn't look at him again without embarrassing yourself.
"Naw, you're blushing. Cute." he leaned against the marble counter behind him, setting down his mug before he continued. "Okay i can't help myself here, you're just..too tempting. Therefore, rule number two. We need to keep this professional."
You blurted out a laugh with your eyes closed before you opened them to look at him. "That one is going to be very hard, Jack. The only reason i haven't accepted your offer yet is because you are my attending and every time i look at you, i just want to get on my knees "
Another stretch of silence followed and you couldn't bear to look at him. Your face felt like it was on fire.
"i know i know. It's not fair to you and i know that. But i personally think we can manage to do this AND keep both of our jobs. I just...really want to help you finish your residency. After that, you can blow me into the wind and never talk to me again."
"Why would i do that?"
"Because with that much temptation, eventually resentment will set in and you might be fed up by the point you're done. I've seen it. "
"What if i want you even more after i finish my residency?"
The question hung in the air like a brick waiting to fall. You shouldn't have asked but he wanted all cards on the table, so might as well risk it and ask.
"If by that point you're not scared and running away from me, something is deeply wrong with you."
"Ouch" you mimicked a knife stabbing into a chest with both your hands and earned a light chuckle from Jack. "I can always make it worse for you"
"Is that a promise? Please tell me it's a promise"
"You're such a brat."
"Yeah and you don't seem to care at all" you shrug your shoulders before you set down your mug.
Jack was fighting with himself, really trying to just ignore everything and keep establishing the rules. "Believe me, i care. More than i fucking should. I'm trying to help you here, will you let me continue? Thank you" he continued without waiting another beat.
"I will pay for your tuition and your apartment, and you will save up any money you have. So that way, by the end of it, you can decide what you want to do and where you want to go." he held up his index finger before adding "And you will stay here for a little bit until we have this marcus-situation figured out. He can probably track down where you live if he already knows where you shop. I'll drive you and pick you back up."
You were about to argue when he added "ah-ah, no arguing. We're not doing all of this for him to find you again. There is zero room for argument here. Understand?"
You nodded before fiddling with your fingers. "People are gonna start asking questions if they find out" you whispered and reality slowly came back to you. Everything was fucked. You were fucked.
Jack uncrossed his arms when he came up to you, putting a hand on your shoulder. "as much as i like teasing you, i want you to be safe. No one we work with lives around here and I don't care if people talk. I want to make sure you are safe and if that means that you'll be living here for a little bit, then so be it. We are both two grown ass adults, who cares about gossip."
You cared. You cared a lot because they would judge you if they found out and title you as the one sleeping with the boss to gain yourself benefits, even if you didn't even sleep with him.
The two of you had to keep it at bay to protect both of you from damage.
"We need to keep this professional, i get that. We might have to come up with excuses on why i suddenly live 20 minutes away instead of 40" you thought out loud and earned a nod from Jack.
"No problem. Your car is in the shop, i happened to pick you up" Jack delivered right away.
"every shift?"
"You live on the way back from my nude yoga sessions " he was the one to shrug this time.
"I'm sure no one is questioning that one"
"They wouldn't want to"
"Okay" you laughed out loud in disbelief. "What if someone sees me around your house?"
"Only Robby knows where i live. And i am sure if we explain it to him, he would understand"
"I would like this to stay between us as much as possible"
"That's fine. But i am sure if he ever asked and i explained to him whats up, he would understand. Just sayin'" Jack tried to reassure you but even he wasn't a hundred percent sure that it would all work out this way. People could talk. He realized how fucked up his entire idea was but he couldn't have you go back there. Not with everything that already happened.
"And if they find out, then what? This isn't just my residency on the line, its also your job on the line, Jack." you noted and he knew you were right. "If they find out, we will talk about it. But until that happens, we keep it professional. We have to, Kiddo. "
"Professional. Platonic. Jack, that's just not fair. You knowing i have a crush on you won't make this any easier" you took a step back to create some distance, covering your eyes with your hands to think about everything he just said. "That's such a big risk, especially for you"
"I've taken bigger risks before and at some point in your life, you gotta decide if you want to survive, or live. If you don't want any of this then i'm not forcing you. We don't have to interact with each other at all. I'm just trying to offer solutions"
His truth hit you right in the gut. He was right. He was so fucking right and you were so fucking sick of how right he was, every. single. fucking. TIME.
You stayed quiet, trying to keep the emotions at bay that threatened to overwhelm you. The last couple of years weren't easy and you couldn't remember the last time you were able to sleep through the night. All you wanted was a stable life and someone to come home to, one day. Why did everything always have to be so fucking complicated?
"You don't think your life is worth the trouble. I get it. If you haven't caught on by now, this is the way i live by too." he took a step towards you but the truth hurt too much this time. You took another step back and he met you with another step forwards. "You are a much better person then your give yourself credit for, Kiddo" he added, pushing you right up against the wall with the last step he took.
"You don't know me that well, Jack" you whispered, a tear flowing down your cheek. The wall you built up over time finally crumbled, releasing all pent up emotions. And Jack just watched you cry, offering support with his body firmly pressed against yours. "You deserve good things." he whispered, wiping away the tears that just kept coming. You slapped away his hand, feeling too vulnerable in front of him, too cut open. He let you, let you have the feeling of being in control again until you calmed down.
"I just don't want to feel like shit, for once" you whispered, your lip shaking.
"I know, kiddo. I'm right there with you. "
"Do you ever feel like you are enough? does it ever get better?" the tears just wouldn't fucking stop.
"Eventually, you start to accept that this hole inside you might never go away. You learn to live with it"
"Great. Fuck you"
"Its just the truth, i fear. "
It took you a while to calm down and by the end of your outbreak, jack had pulled you into a tight hug and your head was resting on his shoulder.
"Jack, i don't know if i can just accept your offer. I will feel so guilty taking this money from you and putting you into this position"
"I know and i get it. Just...let me do this for you. You can make dinner on days you feel like it, if that makes you feel better"
"I suck at cooking but.. i can try"
"Does that mean you accept my offer?" he tilted your head back slightly with the tip of his finger, meeting your swollen eyes like its the most natural thing to do.
"Only if you promise to be straight with me. Tell me, if you can't afford this anymore"
Jack chuckled, the vibration rumbling through his chest. "I can afford to watch you cry, don't worry"
You punched him into the side of his shoulder and couldn't help but laugh a little.
"Alright, fine. I will accept your money, sugar daddy "
He sighed laughing, shaking his head. "My god, you're such a fucking brat"
"Fucking sue me, asshole" you laughed wholeheartedly, wiping away your tears with your wrist.
"Also, Jack? "
"Yes?"
"I think you're better with emotions then you let yourself believe"
