Review of ‘From Father to Son’ by kipam (2015)

Sorry for the late post, but the Giovanni doujinshi by kipam were all really heartwarming and amazing, and here’s my review of each of them. I’ll be starting with the first doujin, ‘From Father to Son’. There are 3 stories in this doujin.

Story 1 is about how Giovanni had to single-handedly raise Silver by himself after the passing of his wife. As this doujin is based on the Pokémon Adventures manga, Silver gets kidnapped when he was little one day, and Giovanni desperately began looking for him. Eventually, he quit as the Gym Leader of Viridian Gym and started Team Rocket so that he could have the resources to find his son, and has done, “a few... no, countless bad things” in the process. The story ends with Giovanni believing that he will find Silver one day.

Story 2 is about Giovanni giving his Sneasel to his son on his birthday when he was little, and telling Sneasel to take good care of his son from then on.

Story 3 is about Giovanni asking Red to pass a gift to Silver, and in it was a photo of Silver as a baby with his mother, and a letter detailing how Silver was born on a snowy day, and the hopes his parents had for him. The letter ends with Giovanni telling Silver that he loves him. Silver cried after reading the letter, and tells Red he will go with him to visit his father.

Review of ‘A Gift to You’ by kipam (2017)

The third doujinshi contains just one story. The story starts off with Silver grumbling to himself that he doesn’t have a nice father, and Weavile immediately grabbed him, trying to convince him otherwise. Weavile starts recalling the times Giovanni had been a kind and loving father to Silver when he was little, thinking about how much he wanted to tell Silver that his father loves him more than anything in the world.

They later run into Yellow, and she noticed that Weavile seemed to have something it wants to say. She listened to Weavile, and then conveyed to Silver everything it told her. She told him about how much his father loves him, about how he is constantly on his mind, and that he would even save him from the flames of a volcano while being burnt. Silver, touched by what he has heard, thanked Yellow and goes to buy his father a gift.

My thoughts on kipam’s doujinshi are that they were all really well-executed, and I really loved how kipam emphasised on the father-son relationship between Giovanni and Silver. While I don’t read the Pokémon Adventures manga due to... reasons, I suppose kipam chose to base the doujinshi on the manga as that is the Pokémon media in which Giovanni shares the strongest bond with Silver. In the games, he’s at most seen as a typical villain boss who abandons everything, including his own team and his son, to go into solitary training. It would be really nice to imagine that even the Giovanni of the games actually loves his son this much, though.

Review of ‘Once Again, in this Place’ (or もう一度この場所で) by kipam (2016)

This doujin has 2 stories. Once again, kipam’s work is really heartwarming as always.

Story 1 is about how Blue wants to give up his position as the Viridian City Gym Leader to become a researcher like his grandfather, and Silver decides to take up the challenge for the position. He wins the match together with his Weavile, and Blue passes the Earth Badge to him. Silver then happened to spot Giovanni, who congratulated him when he saw the Earth Badge on his lapel. The story ends with Giovanni sitting by his late wife’s grave and telling her about how Silver became a Gym Leader.

Story 2 starts with Giovanni having a dream of his late wife to visit ‘that place’, so that the three of them can be together once again in a long time. When Giovanni visited her grave, he realised that Silver had ended up there too. Giovanni’s late wife then appeared as an apparition and thanked them for going all the way there. When Silver questioned why she had called them there, Giovanni passed him a gift, which contained a hat and a muffler. Giovanni told him the muffler was in one of his mother’s favourite colours. He makes Silver thank his mother, and when he did, Silver seemed to feel a warm gust of wind. The story ends with both of Silver’s parents wishing him a happy birthday, and telling him that they love him.

I did it! I finally found some Giovanni doujin, something I’ve been looking for since I arrived in Japan! I visited Ikebukuro earlier, and found the above 3 books at 2 different shops, KBooks and Mandrake. The artist of all 3 of them is kipam, the same artist who drew the pink-haired OC that is Giovanni’s late wife. I suppose there aren’t that many Giovanni doujin to begin with, so kipam’s were the only ones I found.
