Randomly the other day, I was like "What if Hanahaki disease wasn't caused by unrequited love but the belief that your love is unrequited?"

So like the love interest could potentially reciprocate but if the one with Hanahaki disease doesn't know that or doesn't believe it to be true even when presented with evidence that their love has been reciprocated. "You only say that you love me only because you don't want to be responsible for my death" as the sufferer continues to cough up bouquets of flowers.

And ofc, I am going to bring this to the kiralfonse ship because it's literally the thing ive been hyperfocused on for about nine or ten years now. Ive seen Kiran get Hanahaki disease on Ao3 but what about Alfonse, the guy that makes it his personal mission to avoid making friends with Heroes and by some extension, Kiran? The guy who also tells Alear to keep an emotional distance from the Emblems in her forging bond event (rank A) long after most of us had seen his lvl 40 confession conversation? Early game Alfonse would probably be too stubborn and afraid of vulnerability to open up to Kiran about his feelings to them. I remember seeing a post here a while ago (I believe that was posted by @hulloitsdani but im not about to dig for that post while im at work :/) about how both Alfonse and Sharena are very lonely people but go about handling the feeling of loneliness it in different ways. Sharena tries to befriend all the Heroes she meets while Alfonse pushes them away because he afraid of being vulnerable with them but also desperately wants to connect with people.

So basically just imagine the fucking possibilities with this trope. I could make an actual attempt at this or make a crackfic where Alfy is just melodramatically being like "The summoner doesn't love me" whilst coughing up roses or something and Kiran being like "dude, I literally just told you that im in love with you now, so stop trying to sacrifice yourself!" And then Líf's in the background reading a book while the two idiots in love argue about who's more of a self sacrificing idiot and he thinking "damn I dont remember getting married this young"
