Preparations: Part Two

The peace in Light's Hope was shattered as Kirenestus threw a book against a wall and gave a frustrated scream. "That bitch!" He upended the chair he'd been sitting in. Stopped just short of smashing the container holding the nightmare vine. He looked down at it with a sneer. He wanted to set fire to it, to watch the poisonous pollen go up like goblin fireworks. He didn't like the idea of owing Rosefica, not even a little. She always took the opportunity to dig the knife in deeper. Petty, childish. Both of them were. It would serve them right if the Legion corrupted all of Quel'thalas. He hoped it did. He hoped his grandfather betrayed them all. They deserved it.

"Tell us how you really feel." Kelenar leaned against a wall, observing him. The other paladins and priests very obviously looked anywhere but at him. Kelenar watched with the kind of resigned irritation that Kirenestus had grown used to seeing from him for the last couple months. "I hope you're not planning on any destruction. You are in a church." He pointed to the chapel around them. "You'd like the opportunity to lock me up, wouldn't you?" Kirenestus gave a resigned sigh, righted his chair, and sat back down heavily. Kelenar wrinkled his nose and shook his head. "Not so much, that's too much effort. A good punch to the face, though. That might be therapeutic for both of us." At Kirenestus's glare, he held up a hand. "Get over them both. Traejan is always going to be an immature brat. It's what he's good at. Rosefica is always going to be vindictive and have more powerful men than anyone understands chasing after her. Light help us all if she ever realizes and uses that power to her advantage, she'll have Lor'themar himself at her beck and call." Kirenestus rubbed at his temples and muttered, "Not helpful." He collapsed against the table in front of him, his cowl falling forward to hide his face from view. "Did you expect a rousing ovation from them? An award for heroism?" He snorted softly. "You could do everything right and still you'll only get grief from both of them...from Traejan for sure, for ruining things, trafficking with demons, and losing control of an addiction. Believe me, I know. It's why we don't talk and why I still regret not killing him at the first opportunity." When Kirenestus looked up at him, Kelenar gave a shrug. "I never claimed to be a good little paladin. Now, what are you supposed to be doing with this thing?" He pointed at the nightmare vine. Kirenestus gave another heavy sigh, but pushed himself back up and reached for a different book. He flipped through the pages until he found the right journal entry. "I never actually participated in the ritual to become a demon hunter, but I was responsible for helping to control the demons they used, and so I saw it done often enough. Nightmare vine pollen is a poison. You have to carefully remove the pods in order to use the vine for other potions. When it's prepared properly with its pollen pods, it creates a powerful enough hallucinogen to cripple even a powerful demon for long enough for me to complete the ritual alone." Kelenar looked at the page skeptically. "And Rosefica couldn't have just made this thing for you?" "I doubt it. It's not widely used. I think the people I worked with stumbled upon it by accident. I've had to make it a few times, the Legion tried to send pit lords against us and it's also a great defensive weapon." He closed the book and started gathering up all of his supplies, stuffing them into a leather bag. All except the nightmare vine. "It's only viable for a short time after it's made, so I'll need to make it in the field, after I know where I'm going to find a decent demon." "What kind were you hoping for?" Kelenar looked down at a chart, written in Eredun, with several demon types that Kirenestus was in the process of rolling up. "Nathrezim, or possibly ered'ruin. I've summoned doom guards before, it shouldn't be a problem to subdue one. Nathrezim are another thing altogether. Just finding one outside of a Legion invasion is difficult." Kirenestus finished packing his supplies and threw the bag over one shoulder, then picked up the nightmare vine. "I was thinking we'd go to Tanaan Jungle." Kelenar stared at him for a second, then shook his head. "Never easy with you. Fine, but we need to go now. It's going to take a while to get there. The only contact I have with a boat to get us there is Alliance. And I can't heal you anymore. You were unconscious for hours after our last session. Another could kill you." "Understood. I won't do anything to cause the symptoms to progress faster, at least until we get there." Kirenestus picked up the vine and followed Kelenar out of the chapel and to the netherdrake waiting on them.

Preparation: Part One

The foreboding feeling started months ago. Kirenestus was struggling and searching for a way to control the fel power he’d acquired in far too short a span. His skin was changing. He could feel the craving for fel magic wracking his body. Discolored spots appeared over both his eyes. His back itched. But it was when he cut his finger on the edge of a page and the spilled blood glowed green for a moment that his search for an answer expanded to previously off-limits sections of the estate.

Forgoing his usual flashy robes, Kirenestus chose instead a simple black tunic and face-concealing cowl for his break-in to Donovath’s offices. His hands were covered in thin black leather gloves. Black pants and soft black leather boots were added to the ensemble, along with a simple black sash for a belt. He sat in his room, and with the assistance of his succubus, he cut his blond hair short, then shaved off the goatee at his chin. The succubus applied a temporary black dye to his hair, while Kirenestus affixed charmed earrings to his ears. They shifted his facial features, just enough that he shouldn’t be recognized if the mask came off. 

Kirenestus didn’t trust anything in the house. Not with the wards on Donovath’s office door, more powerful fel magic than anything he’d learned before. And not with Donovath’s new servants skulking around, watching him as they went about their duties. And certainly not with the estate’s Scourge and demon protection no longer answering his commands. If he was caught, he wanted to be a nameless rogue, caught in a high-stakes theft.

The succubus stood watching him, smirking at him in a way completely unlike her normal flirtatious attitude, for far longer than she needed to after he dismissed her. He frowned, but shrugged it off, even when she flipped through his journal before disappearing.

Kirenestus shoved twin daggers of glowing fel green crystal into his belt. Made of shards of fel-infused power crystal, the same crystals the Sin’dorei used to store energy for the city, Kirenestus was certain the residual fel energy ought to be enough to short out the wards on the door of the office. The invisibility spell was easy. He waited until Donovath left the house, and then he sneaked up the stairs to Donovath’s office, wincing only slightly at the creaky floorboards.

Kirenestus slipped the daggers from his belt and forced them into the cracks around the door of the office. Fel energy shot up his arm and he had to bite his lip to avoid crying out. The daggers blazed, threatening to shatter, but then they dimmed as the wards on the door shattered. Kirenestus could smell burnt flesh, but he tried to ignore the pain in his hands as best he could as he stuffed the daggers back into his belt and opened the door. Downstairs, he could hear furniture toppling as his felhound caused a distraction. He didn’t have much time.

Kirenestus looked around the office, skipping over the books in plain view immediately. Even sealed and warded, the books he wanted would be protected from view. He moved to the window seat and the hidden compartment within, prying it open with the edge of one of his blades.

Inside were several books wrapped in plain brown oilcloth. He shoved them into his tunic without looking at them. Beneath the books, fel green crystals glittered. Kirenestus froze, staring. He knew those crystals. He knew what they were, from the Outland war. He reached inside to pick one up and stared intently at the interior of it. At the blood elf’s touch, a pit lord began to speak. Kirenestus’s blood ran cold. He shoved the crystals into his tunic as well, and then fled the room through the now-unwarded window. His hawkstrider waited, saddled near the stable, and he flung himself onto her back. They went riding out of the estate and into the forest bare moments before Donovath came thundering up the road to the estate at a gallop on his dreadsteed.

A note left in his room stated his intention to head to a goblin spa in Kalimdor in order to hopefully help stem his addiction. He hadn’t meant to act on it so soon, but his hands shook as he stared at the crystals. He knew what they meant.

The Legion was coming. And his grandfather was working with them.

The hawkstrider never slowed as he made his way to the Pass. He wouldn’t be safe in Quel’thalas, not with what he carried now, but he couldn’t make his way directly to Outland yet. He had some favors to call in, first. One of which would hurt like hell and probably make a paladin’s day. He headed for Hearthglen.

I’ll be brief, just in case you’re about to incinerate this letter. You remember my work in trying to oppose the Burning Legion. The situation in Tanaan Jungle has me worried. It needs to be won quickly and decisively before it gets out of hand.

I know I’ve acted like an ass in the past, but consider this a friendly warning from someone who ought to know...be careful.

That’s all for now. I’m still trying to get good reports from Tanaan.

I won’t pretend we’re anything but enemies, but please continue reading a moment. You remember my work opposing the Legion. I haven’t been idle in the time I’ve been out of the public eye. This situation in Tanaan has me worried. Azeroth forces are very visibly opposing the Legion, and we’ve already spat in their eyes a few times now. I fear no matter which way this battle turns in Tanaan, for or against us, we may gain the Legion’s ire again.

I stopped summoning demons several months ago. My work now is too sensitive. I won’t bore you with the details, I doubt you care. This hasn’t been a group project since my grandfather came home looking younger than me.

Just keep an eye on Tarin and Rose, please? And if you’re fool enough to get in the middle of the fighting in Tanaan, I’ll pay handsomely for intelligence on the Legion.

By now, I’m sure you realize I’m not at the goblin resort in Kalimdor. I have my own home. No, I’m not going to say where. I found the messages in the crystals in your office. I know who you’ve been talking to and what you’ve become. You’re practically a demon now, aren’t you? Serving the Legion faithfully?

Funny, I know the truth and I’ve ruined my reputation so thoroughly no one will believe me.

Funny, Illidari and Legion in one family, both busy trying to win. First to the finish, I suppose.

"You'd have died if it weren't for me, you know."

She could barely breathe past the pain in her chest, could only look up high enough to see the felblood's clawed hand scratching his little gray cat behind her ears. Her purr was louder than seemed possible.

She coughed. Coughed and coughed until she spat up blood, before she could speak. "I...I know. That was reckless of me. Going out on my own. I didn't think...Didn't know they'd leave worgen to guard the place."

"Now you know. And neither of us are going to speak about this again, are we?" He pulled out a glowing green stone from a pocket in his robes and crushed it in his hand. Kirenestus ran the stone over her injuries and they began to heal rapidly. "Not how close you came to death, nor how different I looked while saving you."

She looked up into his face and felt her blood run cold. His words were pleasant, but the look in his eyes was cold. Empty. She shook her head quickly. "No! No, no, of course not. We can keep that between us, Lord Duskhallow."
