1, 5, 9, 12, 20 for the WIP asks <3

Okay let me talk about my main/current WIP which is puppetskier nonsense called Coin Operated Boy. I have one chapter left to finish but it’s been such a silly and fun time. So much nonsense and whump.

Give a 5-word summary of this chapter/fic.

Philippa curses Jaskier into a puppet. (Okay 6 words…)

Are there any OCs in this chapter/fic? Who’s your favorite?

Every chapter features an OC because I’ve been exploring Jaskier’s relationships in Oxenfurt in that period between seasons 1 and 2.

Corydosia is Jaskier's sex worker friend he met while they were both students at Oxenfurt (and I have this whole backstory/side story for her that doesn't make it into puppetskier, heh).

Karsten is the 10 year old Eternal Fire acolyte that Jaskier befriends while he’s a puppet.

Mortimer is the academic frenemy that Jaskier has a running beef with for good, pedantic reasons.

Shani is still Shani but verging on OC territory because there's only so much I am drawing upon from the books/games, but I'm still hoping she's coming across as thoughtful and engaging and in-character in her own way.

They are all my favorite, it’s so hard to choose just one! I will say that Karsten holds a special place in my heart because he's so precious. I actually wrote the first scene with him a year and half ago for a different story where Karsten is 19 years old and making “devil’s music” with a sorceress in Novigrad, and is musically roasting Jaskier and Jaskier fucking loves it. Karsten’s eventually going to get ex-communicated from the church and help Ciri out, if I ever manage to work on that stuff again.

9. What is your favorite dialogue you’ve written so far?

“I think I’d get a better deal selling my soul to an actual devil,” Jaskier said. “Nearest devil’s in Novigrad and his interest rates have gone up since Nilfgaard took Cintra,” Mortimer said without missing a beat.

12. What emotions do you expect your readers to feel?

I hope folks will laugh and boggle at the absurdity and relate to the existential fears and frustrations Jaskier’s experiencing in his moments of stress. Hope folks find hope in Jaskier’s resiliency despite the odds he’s facing in the story and in the background as well.

Shani face cast is Jessica Sula, whom I imprinted on when she was on Skins back in the day.

Mortimer Meinbald, Professor of Supernatural Phenomena is Jason Mantzoukas (he would be so fucking funny to see play off Joey in a scene)

Karsten face cast is a really young Sean Teale. These are from his teenage years but yeah just imagine him as a small child talking to a puppetskier.

Kermit has too many expressions and antics I love for Jaskier, and the number of puppet hole jokes I could not resist, well...

13. Wildlife

The elemental flamed wildly in Kirielle’s face. She ducked behind her shield, feeling the metal begin to heat. As soon as the jet died down she lunged, swung, and buried her sword, well, somewhere in the mass of the elemental. It flared out.

She looked around for Meliraea. The druid was halfway up a smoldering log, cooing at a squirrel. The squirrel, for its part, was clearly terrified--reasonable, given the forest was on fire--and completely uninterested in Mel’s attempts to catch it.

Kirielle blinked. “Seriously?”

Mel glanced down. “But the nice dryad asked!” The squirrel took the opportunity to scratch Mel’s still outstretched hand. Kirielle stared at the druid flatly. “And look at them! We can’t just leave them to burn.” Wide, innocent eyes flinched as the squirrel took another swipe before retreating further up the log.

A spark burst not far from Mel. With a sigh, Kirielle charged forward. Deliberately, she clipped the log, knocking the squirrel loose. Mel caught it with an indignant squeak as Kiri thumped forward, shield slamming down over the growing elemental. Oxygen-starved, the spark burned out. Bending over to lift the shield, Kiri sighed. Then she leaned further over and scooped up a fawn from the little hollow it had curled up in.

“Aw, you do care.” Mel grinned, brightly, tucking the squirrel in her bag where it joined two traumatized bunnies and another slightly singed squirrel. She was careful to leave the bag open enough that her rescues could breathe.

Kiri immediately frowned on principle. “I cannot carry this fawn and fight elementals at the same time. Let’s go.” Mel nodded, still grinning, and set off. As soon as the druid’s back was turned, Kiri relaxed into a small smile.

I am a creature that love her comforts, one of my favorite pieces of clothing are my fuzzy panda pajamas pants. But I also love my graphic t-shirts. One of my old favorite t-shirts was the Pikachu’ified Tesla vs Edison Electric Clash. 30. what reminds you of home (doesn’t have to mean house… just things that remind you of the feeling of home)?

2. Reward

There were days Kirielle couldn’t get out of bed, knowing that she would have to hobble. Sometimes, on days she managed to get to work, she would have to stumble away from the forge and sit, and remember how to breathe through the pain. Nevermind the lost work. Nevermind the days drifting past in a fog of telling herself it would get better.

And there were days when Feyarin bounced in, so young still despite being grown, whole and healthy and safe. Days when Fey showed off her baking disasters--better all the time--and coaxed a laugh from her guardian. Days she let Kiri forget that the woman who had gone to Northrend had not quite returned. Nights when even Fey ran out of words and simply sat, a comforting presence in what would otherwise have been a set of cold, empty rooms.

And then there were days--The sun light and warm. The breeze gently curling over shallow water, lilies bobbing in its wake. The entirety of Teldrassil alive with the scent of something green and growing as Darnassus blossomed in the spring--And Kiri breathed it all in.

1. Lights and Fires

Blue lights flickered between the trees below. Meliraea turned to the great wicker bear in the cave once more. “Has it...always been like this?” Her voice was soft in the relatively healthy glow.

Ulfar grunted. “Not for many years. There were good things in these woods once.” He did not seem inclined to say more.

Carefully, Meliraea picked her way outside. There was snow on the mountain, but Kirielle had seen colder, and Mel never minded a little chill. Kirielle had set up a modest camp while Meliraea was questioning the druids, a little ways down the road. Kiri looked up at Mel’s approach, sighed when Mel shook her head. For a time, the two were quiet, the pop of the small, sheltered fire the only sound in the cool air.

Meliraea looked out over the forest falling away from the rim of the mountain road. There was something almost hypnotic in the winking of those blue lights. She might have been tempted to walk down among them, but for the rot she could sense oozing from every once-green thing in the woods.

“When was your mother supposed to meet us?”

Kirielle looked up from her cloudy rumination. “Yesterday.” Their eyes met briefly, bleakly.

“One more day, then?” Mel asked, returning her gaze to the Drust wilds. She pressed her sense out, seeking a touch of a different kind of corruption. It was no use, of course. Even the last trace of lingering fel couldn’t compete with this much decay.

Kirielle shrugged. “I suppose.” She turned back to her contemplation of the small fire. The flames, for their part, seemed to know Kiri’s tension, crackling in the sudden, forbidding wind.

22. Fate

The archdruid stood uncomfortably in the closed-in smithy, trying not to make eye contact with the worgen behind the counter. The night elf he had come to see was sitting at a worktable, something decorative and delicate taking shape under her hands. She finally looked up when he began to fidget.

“Was there something you needed?” Kirielle asked politely. “I’m sure my apprentice can handle it.”

“I really don’t think she can. I was sent from Nordrassil, by a member of the green dragonflight. It’s urgent.”

“Then you should have said something sooner.” Kirielle gripped a metal stick, carefully worked to look like a tree branch, and shoved herself to her feet. She leaned heavily on the cane as she came around the workbench. “Was there something you needed?” she repeated, slowly and politely.

“We need a bodyguard, and everyone says you are the best.” He eyed her unsteady stance uncertainly.

Kiri huffed a laugh. “Used to be.” She tapped at her leg briefly with her cane. “If you think your dragon can trust whoever this is to ‘used to be’...” She let the sentence trail off, certain that the answer would be “No.”

Pursing his lips, the archdruid said, “Hyjal is burning. They need someone to help this...this healer...to. I don’t even know, but somehow the dragon seems to think she can fix it.”

There was a skepticism to the way he said it that made Kirielle suspicious. “Who is this healer?” she asked.

“That’s just it,” the archdruid snapped. “She’s nobody. But rumor has it the Dreamer herself requested this...green...untried…” He flapped a hand, words failing him.

So that was it. They weren’t going to try to find someone better, not for a dragon’s whim. Not for something that looked like a longshot rather than fate.

“Lynara,” Kirielle said, turning to the worgen. “I do apologize, but I think I have to go to Nordrassil. Will you be able to find somewhere to stay for a while?”

The worgen dipped her head. “It’s been a few months. I’ve made friends since I was lucky enough to catch your attention. I’ll be fine.”

Kirielle grinned disarmingly at the archdruid. “Very well, then. I will see to this healer. If she can keep me standing, I can keep her safe. I’ll make my way there as soon as possible.”

Sourly, the archdruid said, “We have a hippogryff waiting.” He turned and stalked out without another word. Kirielle sighed. She’d been itching for something to do since the war in Northrend had ended, but escorting a healer who had never seen combat? It wasn’t how she’d imagined getting out, or going out. It was a terrible idea. But, well, she’d been nobody once. She had to help.

She sighed. “I guess I’d better pack my things.”

7. Reunion

I am sorry to inform you that Commander Kirielle has gone missing while scouting the Broken Shore, and, with the information available to us, I can only presume that she is dead. I happened to remember that the two of you were close, and thought you ought to know…

The worn letter fell as the Emerald Dream blossomed around the druids and their allies, Xavius’ bloated form dissolving into nothing more than a fading nightmare. Meliraea pushed through the slowly dispersing crowd, all staring in wonder at the pure life that had somehow survived. At the edge of the crowd, moving slowly, wide-eyed, stood Mel’s target. There had been no time, in the lead-up to this dangerous delve into corruption, to do more than scream internally with joy when she realized that Kirielle—not dead, somehow—had arrived in response to the druids’ call for aid. If that joy had fueled a strength of healing unexpected in the heart of the Nightmare, well, so much the better. But this—this was what she had been waiting for, hoping for.

Mel crashed into Kiri with the force of a charging bear, knocking them both to the ground with a resounding clank as Kiri’s shield and armor collided.

“Archdruid?” a voice called, lightly concerned.

Mel was too busy kissing Kiri to do more than wave a hand in acknowledgement. Slowly, they pulled apart to catch their breath, surrounded by tall, verdant grass and the smell of flowers in full bloom. There was a melancholy to Kiri’s features that even her soft smile up at Mel couldn’t fully drive away. Mel wondered what had happened. But it could wait, just this once.
