Mugshot Monday - “Brown Soda Fired Porcelain Mug” by Kirk Jackson with Snowshoe Brew by Peace Coffee
I’ve only just started following Jackson on Instagram (@kirkjackson1) – he’s a ceramic artist living in Missoula, MT and sells his work at Red Lodge Clay Center.
I really like his work -- his shapes and his soda firing on porcelain is really cool. He sometimes puts a dimple in his cups where the handle is for some extra room for your digits. Neat idea. This mug feels soooooo cozy to drink from.
This is another mug from Jeff Oestreich’s collection – he’s teaching my ceramics class at Northern Clay Center called “Can you handle it?” We’re focusing on how to make handles.
He told us to choose a different mug each week so we could “live” with it which has been a very reflective experience for me. Jeff says a cup is one of the most intimate ceramic objects because you need to hold it and caress it, and you bring it to your mouth to drink from. This is so true!
I really like Jackson’s handle -- it’s VERY different than the ones I’ve been learning. I think I’d like it a little longer, but maybe that wouldn’t feel as good. I’m inspired to experiment!
Here are some photos of the full mug. Cheers!
