“The Maker blessed us with minds and a conscience. He does not approve when we fail to use them.”
Wow Elthina, how insightful! I wonder who could really stand to listen to this advice… 🤔

Now that I think about it, Kirkwall is basically the Night Vale of Thedas.
You’ve got the scary Orwellian government with its death squads and mind-wiping, the Eldritch abominations from another dimension, the incompetent cops who engage in plenty of police brutality while never seeming to solve any real crimes, the cultists and bizarre rituals, plenty of hooded figures, real conspiracies, and everyone living there pretty much becoming Conditioned to Accept Horror within a few weeks or so of arrival.
You can swap out only a couple of words from WTNV quotes and basically get accurate descriptions of Kirkwall.
How the authorities deal with the continuous crime wave:
The Sheriff’s Secret Police City Guard are asking the public’s help in catching a dangerous fugitive on the loose in the greater Night Vale Kirkwall area. They say he is armed, and should be approached with extreme caution. For everyone’s protection, they are keeping the name and description of the fugitive secret, but indicate that all strangers should be mistrusted and avoided, as well as friends and loved ones because how well do you know those people anyway? Are you aware of their location every second of every day? Who among us does not have secrets? The fugitive is wanted dead or alive, and vigilante justice is, as always, highly encouraged.
Orsino and Meredith arguing during The Last Straw:
Representatives from local Civil Rights organizations have protested that officers had no legal grounds to search the vehicle Circle tower, but they ceded the point when reminded by Secret Police Templar officials that our backwards court system will uphold any old authoritarian rule made up on the fly by unsupervised gun- sword-carrying thugs of a shadow government.
Elthina talking about why mages are locked in the Gallows is pretty much like:
But don’t let the name fool you, listeners. It’s been used for years for so many kidnappings and illegal detentions, that the abandoned mine shaft ‘slave dungeon’ outside of town is actually a pretty nice location these days… Also, torture cubicles.
Cullen on why he supports Meredith:
She has been controversial, to be sure, but she is our leader. Our parent. She cares very much about us, Night Vale, and when she jails or tortures someone without just cause or due process, it is because she loves this town so much.
How the Chantry deals with Kirkwall’s poverty problem:
Try not to be in a lower economic class, and give regularly to an approved religious organization.
Varric, every day, probably:
Let's not dwell on our corpse-strewn past. Let's celebrate our corpse-strewn future.
Hawke, after another night of vigilante killing, probably:
“Do we sometimes catch the wrong guy?” said Vincent Hawke. “Sure. Most of the time. We’re not sure we’ve ever caught a guilty one. Usually we just grab the first person we see. One time we tried to arrest the dead body, but it got away.”
After killing everyone in Night Terrors:
The good news is that none of those we lost today are technically dead.
What it’s like living in Kirkwall in general:
Well, I think we’re all both proud and terrified most of the time, and that’s because we live in the best city-state town in this county, in this state, and in this nation. That’s where the pride comes from. The terrified part is because life is terrifying. It just is.
I can’t be the only one who sees the resemblance, can I?
Kirkwall Chantry
Hmmmm
anyone know what the statues outside the Chantry in Kirkwall represent?
Especially the two large ones? Are the two big ones leftovers from when it was a magister’s estate or are they templar/chantry officials? (I am suspicious it’s the former b/c of the staves however). Is one of them a militant Andraste? I mean I’m going to check later but I’m curious for fic reasons lol
I am assuming some of the smaller ones are templars proper tho
