Supernatural Beings & Legendary Creatures of Hindu Mythology A Mr. P's Mythopedia presentation...
Kirtimukha is a fearsome monster from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Most often described as an emaciated, ravening lion, the swallowing face of Kirtimukha appears on many temples in South and Southeast Asia.
Kirtimukha was created by Shiva to combat the monster Rāhu. Seeing Kirtimukha's ferocity, Rāhu soon submitted, and Shiva demanded that the lion devour itself. It did as instructed, leaving only its face, which Shiva declared should protect the entrances to his temples going forward.
