yEAH apparently the anime's director wants to complete a darker image of Armin in which he might not be friends with Eren anymore because their moral and idealistic differences will be too strong. But there are hints that Isayama feels differently and disagrees with such an interpretation of Armin. He sort of dodged committing to such a vision by saying that he hasn't said whether they will be friends still or not. We'll have to see.
But the anime has had some discrepancies with characterization in the past as well as drastic omissions of Armin wherein they removed him from scenes and physically replaced him with Mikasa. That really gets me heated. I just feel that the anime is taking a huge departure from the manga in interpretation and some of that makes me feel a little uneasy.

did he really have to have that flashback though right next to the burning bonfire of dead bodies holding a shard of bone from some unknown casualty and gave horrible false hope of marco being alive before you notice the brightness of his outline
