I really like Kiryuu's visual on DL, he looks so mature. Might be because he is still the Satis Town Kiryuu, but only with his past appearance. Btw, I really like short-haired Kiryuu, so it was really exciting to see the Leader Kiryuu on DL since it felt like seeing the Town Mayor Kiryuu cut his hair.

Anyway, this is my favourite expression of his since it really emphasises he was the Satis Town Kiryuu:

DAY 25: DEAD GUY WALKING

(for @ygo5dsmonth2020​: Former Dark Signer, leader of Team Satisfaction/The Enforcers, and a brooding man looking for some satisfaction. Today’s day is all about Kalin Kessler/Kyosuke Kiryu!)

Due to the collide of AU-gust 2020 and this wonderful monthly challenge, today’s post will be a confessional style. The rest of my posts will either be confessional or mix into a chapter of the AU-gust 2020 fic I’m working on. Might as well kill two birds with one stone, eh? Work smarter, not harder ;)

Kiryuu is one of my favorite side characters of 5Ds, and I absolutely love his friendship with Jack and Yusei. In the anime, his friendship with Yusei is deep and bold, and I loved the arc where Kiryuu was known as the Grim Reaper. In the manga, I love how that deep and bold friendship was given to Jack instead. Both growing up in a facility to be Godwin’s guinea pigs, I loved that building of having friends and Jack only accepting Kiryuu as his.

With that being said, I often write Kiryuu as a good and close friend to both of these characters. And since I write a lot of Kingcrabshipping, often you could think of Kiryuu as their ‘best man.’ 

I love how Kiryuu is this dark and chaotic mess when we meet him in the Dark Signers Arc, and then becomes this dark, mysterious, and yet wise character later on. They are nearly polar opposites of each other, and I love that growth he went through. The latter version of Kiryuu is my favorite to write, and I’ll always have Kiryuu be the one who broods yet is the one who can save them all.

DAY 7: THIS TOWN AIN’T BIG ENOUGH

(For @ygo5dsmonth2020. Yeehaw! Bring out your ponchos, set your guns to duel, and show us what all Satisfaction Town has to bring? Is it a character? The city itself? A duel? Satisfy us!)

I decided to give ya’ll some Kiryuu/Jack friendship, cause I imagine these two were very close. They definitely were in the manga, but it sort of shows through in the anime. With that said, a warning for this chapter: spoilers to season 2, especially revolving around the episodes of Crash Town. Otherwise, enjoy!

“So this was the graveyard you chose.”

Turning his head, Kiryuu regarded Jack as he stood on the cliffside beside him, staring down at the newly reformed Satisfaction Town, formerly known as Crash Town. The buildings were being updated now that the threat of working in an underground mine dispersed from the location.

Jack’s lips were held in a tight line, his violet irises glaring fiery at the town. He hadn’t been around when Kiryuu was on his war path of death, seeking a challenger that would end his misery. Who would have thought that his redemption needed to come from the very man he felt guilty for harming? Yusei had defeated him, sent him to the mines, and then followed after him to rescue him.

He didn’t deserve Yusei’s friendship.

“You’re an idiot.”

“I know.” Kiryuu smiled, looking at his knees from where he sat. He could hear Jack’s coat flapping around him as he stared out at the town. It had taken Yusei a lot to shake him out of his self-sacrificing mindset. Those antics had kept him from the brink of death.

“But you don’t have to worry about me anymore. I have purpose once again.” Kiryuu smiled, seeing two familiar little faces come out of one of the houses, their laughter dancing in the air. Nico and West, now under his care, made him feel more alive than he had even as leader of Team Satisfaction. They gave him a purpose: to guide them and help them grow. It was his fault that their father was gone, so now he took up that mantle to make sure they became well established adults. And they were already far better than he could have hoped for.

Kiryuu never thought he’d want to be a parent.

“Are you really satisfied? Living here? You won’t kill yourself again?” He could feel Jack’s gaze upon his shoulder. Blunt and to the point, just as Jack’s style. Asking if Kiryuu had any more suicidal tendencies. He couldn’t help but chuckle. When did he get such a good friend? And why didn’t he spend more time with him?

“I’m never satisfied. You know that.”

Jack laughed, loud and so full of mirth that Kiryuu had to look at him. When his fit ended, he grinned showing off his teeth in the setting sun. Those violet irises landed back on Kiryuu, electricity and fire swirling within them.

“Good. I’d have to beat some sense into you if you said otherwise.”

“With a duel?”

Jack chuckled. Kiryuu did as well.

“Are you subtly trying to challenge the king?”

“I heard Yusei was the new king. You were runner up.”

Kiryuu held back a laugh as Jack’s eyebrow twitched, his grin becoming a bit more agitated. His hands instantly went to his hips, those violet irises now holding a challenge.

“Grab your deck, Kyousuke. I’ll show you to mock me.”

He laughed, standing from the cliffside and following after the former king of Neo Domino City. Yes, his satisfaction could not be tamed. And yes, he found purpose once again through Nico and West. But here, challenging an old friend he thought would never forgive him, gave me one of the greatest satisfactions he could ever hope for.

Need to blog about crash town before I forget the feeling, it's soooo good!!

Crash Town reaaallly got me with how spot on Kiryuu/Kalin's depressive and passively suicidal mood is after everything he's been through and put others through, even though part of it wasn't his fault... And his lack of drive when compared to his past self. But despite everything there are people concerned about him, are rooting for him, and even understand him!

It makes me so emotional how much Nico and West believe in him including their dad. The way Kiryuu is read in so many different ways by others as the Grim Reaper that keeps winning duels, as a strong duelist to admire and believe in by West, as a weak man by Barbara and as a friend by Yusei. He's surrounded by all these people who have quite a lot of thoughts about him and plans. But what truly shined and got through was how Nico and West's father Sergio fought to save him, Nico, and West. Sergio's sacrifice also really mirrors what happens later on in the series in the Ark Cradle and that theme of fighting to get through to others, the struggle to reach out, and truly believe in the present, and a better future which begins with Kiryuu's Satisfaction Town.
