Discovered via Yugipedia some 4Kids YGO deep lore that i missed before coming from the podcast that interviews people who worked for 4Kids (in this episode in particular, with writer Matthew Drdek). Aparently:

Tea and Tristan were originally going to have some more "normal" names (along the lines of Sally and Sam) but the TheWB higher ups asked for some more interesting and "exotic" names

Joey's localized name seems to have been a suggestion from Kazuki Takahashi! It makes some sense when you think about it, as a similar name is used for Jounouchi's RPG character, and a nickname from Bandit Keith (also Season 0 calls his Digital pet Joe)
