Empress Josephine✓ Kitbag (2023)
So on a scale of TLD to HOG how much of a disaster do you think Ridley Scott's Joaquin Phoenix/Jodie Comer Napoleon project will be?
I think it would be closer TLD , because as good as Comer is , she is probably not going to play full vamp version of Josephine and neither Scott would write it, especially for a time period like post-French Revolution elegance. The subject is not as dire as the Last Duel so hopefully there won't be "men bad" as a running theme for every subplot LMAO.
My bets are, the way he is going, he is going to blame every cheating, philandering, antipathy Josephine does in his script on a "Tyrannical" Napoleon or a "Disgusting" Napoleon. Borrowing from the image people have in mind of Phoenix in his most iconic role of Commodus and Comer as Marguerite to craft the most unsubtle dynamic ever pfft!
From what history I have known about this period, the real deal Josephine was mostly broke but slept around and cheated on Napoleon just because she wanted to and married him for security after he wore her down. He cheated on her too and their relationship was a giant mess despite Napoleon seemingly in complete thrall of her. Josephine only realized what she was missing out on way too late when it was time for her to be kicked out marriage on Napoleon need to secure his legacy.
Honestly, as a pairing these two are not that exciting, so they will invent stuff for sure. Especially since the setting is so dramatic! It would hilarious to see how do they manage make the history about one of the most amazing War General and Emperor-climb the world has ever seen by a man about...well a washed out , not that remarkable woman whose only known feature was that Napoleon for some reason was hopelessly devoted to her.
You know Scott would do that. He won't cast a notable actress if he doesn't intend to make the story somehow about Josephine. How wronged she was for cheated out of Empressdom because of no hires in the marriage with Napoleon. How its Napoleon's fault for her cheating with Hippolyte. How everyone is jealous of her and made her life miserable because she was sophisticated compared to country folk female members of Napoleon's family ( just like TLD. Borrowing motifs from his own movie LOL) . How gracious she is anyway to go with dignity at the annulment etc
So hopefully the movie has good budget to look at sparkly costumes but I know we aren't getting anything real or substantive on these two.
A historical drama about two men duelling to determine the veracity of a woman’s rape in 14th century France doesn’t, at first glance, screa
