"Steve was painful to love," he adds, pressing his palm over his eyes. God, no. Not Steve. Clint can't compete against Steve. He makes himself keep perfectly still, though, even if he can't quite stop his fingers from shaking, and forces himself to listen, to not jump to conclusions. James exhales with a self deprecating laugh. "I think I was just as invisible to him as he was to the world. Not that I had any courage to say anything." For the DVD Commentary meme??

The moment Clint hears those words, he can already see how James decides to return to Steve. He's served his purpose, helped James remember, and because of that, he's not going to be needed anymore.

Steve and James go way back, before Clint was even born. Steve is a supersoldier, like James is. They're the same, it makes sense for James to go to Steve.

It doesn't help how Steve has all these qualities that Clint lacks.

So Clint's immediate reaction, in that fraction of a second, is that he's going to lose James to Steve.

It's not exactly rational, the way Clint thinks here. He's afraid, because he loves, for the first time in years. He's allowed himself to open up to this, and it's only been a day, so the thought of losing this so soon is almost crippling.

Clint's insecurities wash over him as a consequence, because he can't see himself on par with Steve, which he equates somewhat with the persona of Captain America (even though deep down he knows this isn't true, but we're talking about an internal reaction that happens too fast to be properly processed).

How many of us haven't found ourselves imagining the worst scenarios ever?

He catches himself though, tries to give himself time to analyze this, and give James time to explain further. It shows that Clint has hope still.

James remembers loving Steve. The way I saw this for the fic was that James had told Steve when they were (a lot) younger how he was waiting for the right partner to avoid answering Steve when he'd asked why he wouldn't bed his dance partners.

Now he remembers that love, but also the way it felt, unrequited. Steve, oblivious and incredibly unaware that Bucky could love him (nobody really wanted Steve's skinny and illness ridden past self - and boy, could we explore on those insecurities there), had never even caught onto anything. And that hurt so much, that James had been a little too eager to go to war just so he can escape his own feelings for a while.

What he feels for Clint is the same love he used to feel for Steve, but now that it's returned, it fills him with such delight, he doesn't know what to do with it. It's dampened by the episode he's had during the night, but it's there and it's amazing.

Why is he telling Clint this, though? For one, James doesn't feel the need to hide anything from Clint. Second, he'd just been trying to tell him how he remembers love. Show him he can love, that Clint has given him this incredible gift.

Stray wasn’t very happy. Normally, things went pretty well on a night but today was different. Stealing the diamonds had been easy, of course it had been, and he hadn’t tripped any alarms. Not that he ever did, but, of course something went wrong, this drunk guy had spotted him and wanted to hold a ‘conversation’ with him, of course it hadn’t turned out to be that and the man had gotten some of his buddies. 

Jason could have guessed what they wanted from him, he knew he looked good, used it to his advantage with the teenage - hormones, anyone? - Robin all the time and it worked so well. Didn’t go well this time and he hated that people wanted to use him, like hell would he let that happen.

Didn’t change that he was in the minority but he had managed to escape pretty easily but one of them got in a lucky stray bullet and his arm had been hit. This left him unable to use his whip to get to higher level in this part of the city and the easiest option was to turn himself into a smaller creature, knowing they’d never know it was him.

He hadn’t calculated in that he’d be found by a Robin of all creatures while he was this tiny, black kitten. Best plan ever, Jason.

Jason unsheathed his sword without thought and pointed it at him, looking at the pretender in front of him blankly and placing Katherina behind him protectively who was glared at the intruder. "Who are you?" He asked coldly, his daughter nodding in the look-a-like's direction, "Yeah, who are you?"
