Rani Chennamma (October 23, 1778 - February 21, 1829) was the Queen of Kittur, India. She was one of the earliest rulers to fight British rule in India. When her husband and son died, she adopted a son so that she would have an heir. The British did not view this adoption as legal and took the opportunity to seize Kittur.  In 1824, she led a rebellion against the British East India Company. Her forces were initially successful, and after their victory she negotiated a treaty with the British. However the British did not honor their agreement and again attacked Kittur, this time with much larger forces.  The British took control of Kittur and Chennama was captured and held as a prisoner of the British until her death five year later.
