If you had to choose one event in your character's past that most influences who they are now, what would it be and why? How did this past event make them feel? How does it shape their actions?

Mark’s would most definitely be his father dying. If he hadn’t died then Mark wouldn’t be in the Coast Guard nor would he have met his girlfriend/future fiancé. It made him feel god awful when it happened and it’ll still hit him with sadness in the present. He looked up to his dad but he was filled with a lot of anger and hatred for why his dad died (cancer). This has also given Mark a fear of death, he’s terrified of how he’ll die and what’ll happen to his loved ones afterwards.
Sergei’s would be enlisting, not that he had a choice. Enlistment was mandatory but after his first year he decided to stay, which lead to him going to the airforce and rising up the ranks there to Captain, and eventually approached by the 141. He was indifferent at the time, his father had done mandatory military and his brothers would too eventually. Now he looks back and he’s glad he stayed.
